People
  • Some of the most famous Ancient Greeks
    include
  • Plato (c.429-327 BC) - He was a brilliant student
of Socrates and later carried on his work. He
gathered Socrates' ideas and wrote them down in a
book. Plato founded the world's first university.
He wrote down his teachings and people all over
the world, even today, study the Greek
    philosophers
  • Aristotle (382-322 BC) - discovered many things
in science and biology. He wrote books about
    physics, poetry, zoology, biology, politics,
governments, and more. His father was the
personal physician of the King of Macedonia. When
Aristotle turned 17, he went to Athens to study
    with Plato.
  • Parmenides - watched an eclipse of the Moon in
about 470 BC, and noticed that the Earth's shadow
was curved. He worked out that if the shadow was
curved, then the Earth must be round.
  • Archimedes - was a mathematician and an engineer.
He designed a machine, called the Archimedean
screw, which could make water flow uphill. His
design has been used for almost 2,000 years, to
take water from rivers to the fields. Archimedes
was able to tell fool's gold from real gold.
  • Pythagoras - was a mathematician. Can find out
    about Pythagoras' theorem on right-angled
    triangles.
  • Alexander the Great- Alexander the Great was born
in 356 B.C. in Pella, Macedonia, the son of
Philip of Macedon, who was an excellent general
and organizer. He was called 'the Great' because
he conquered more lands than anyone before him
and became the overall ruler of Greece.

Culture
  • Who were the Ancient Greeks?
  • The earliest Greek civilizations thrived
nearly 4,000 years ago. Yet, their culture still
impacts our lives today, in the arts, in
philosophy, and in science, math, literature and
politics.Ancient Greece was split into many
different states, each one was ruled in its own
    way
  • When was Ancient Greece?
  • The ancient Greece civilization lasted from
about 800 BC, when the Greeks began to set up
city states, to 146 BC when the Romans invaded
    Greece.
  • Legacy of the Ancient Greeks
  • How Ancient Greece influenced modern day
culture. The influence of the Ancient Greeks are
still felt by us today. The major impact in our
lives in the Arts and Sciences can be seen in
both the past and present day.
  • Trial by Jury, Greek Myths Democracy
  • ?The word 'democracy' is Greek. It means
'government by the people. We have a form of
democracy in the USA, and this is a legacy of the
Athenians and their assemblies and councils.
  • Theatre
  • ?The word 'theatre' is Greek. Most modern
    theatres follow the Greek plan.
  • The Olympics
  • ?The first Olympic Games were held in 776 BC
at the Greek city of Olympia.
  • Marathon?
  • Pheidippides ran from Athens to Sparta to
ask for help against the Persians just before the
Battle of the Marathon (490 BC).? Building
    styles (Architecture)
  • Throughout the world, buildings have been
constructed in the style of Ancient Greece. The
British Museum is an example of this
  • The first alphabet with vowels
  • ?The Ancient Greeks played an important part
in the development of the alphabet. The first two
letters of the Greek alphabet - alpha and beta -
have given us the word 'alphabet'.

Food
  • Perhaps the most important thing to know
about Greek food and Greek cuisine is that eating
out and sharing the dinner is as important as the
food itself. Greeks even have a special word for
this paraia a transcendence of the dinner table
to include conversation, the view, ambiance and
the overall spirit of place as Lawrence Durrell
    phrased it.
  • While the main ingredients of Greek cooking
are basic and few olive oil, honey, yoghurt,
fresh fruits and vegetables, lamb and fish. The
manner in which they are prepared seems to have
    an endless variety and taste.
  • There is also an additional delight,
pretty much unique to Greece, of being invited
into the kitchen to view the offerings and make
your selection. There is as well a wonderful
benefit that the Greek diet provides, whether you
eat meat or are vegan it is arguably the
healthiest diet on the planet as well as
user-friendly to those who want to eat well while
not having to worry about putting on weight.

The Greek diet was very healthy. Food in Ancient
Greece consisted of grains, wheat, barley, fruit,
vegetables, breads, and cake. The Ancient Greeks
grew olives, grapes, figs and wheat and kept
goats, for milk and cheese. They ate lots of
bread, beans and olives. In the Summer months
there were plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables
to eat and in the winter they ate dried fruit and
food they had stored like apples and lentils. As
most of the Greeks lived very near the sea, they
also ate a lot of fish, squid and shellfish. The
soil by the sea was not so rich as on the plains
so the Greeks used irrigation and crop rotation
to keep the soil relatively fertile. In some of
the larger Greek city-states, meat could be
purchased in cook shops. Meat was rarely eaten as
the Greeks felt that just killing and eating a
domesticated animal (like goats) was wrong. The
Greeks would often sacrifice the meat to the gods
first and then might eat some of the meat.
