Western ContactCaptain James Cook
  • January 18, 1778, James Cooks discovery of
    Hawaii and his third pacific voyage.
  • Arrived on the ship called the Revolution
  • Cook named the Islands the Sandwich Islands
  • Natives believed he was the reincarnated god
    Lono, god of peace and agriculture
  • 1779, Cook is killed over a dispute at Kealakekua
    Bay, Big Island.

Christian Missionaries Arrive
  • 1820- the first protestant missionaries arrive
    from New England.
  • Missionaries played a part in developing American
    foreign policy and changing the boundaries of
    expectations in religious life domestically.
  • When early missionaries arrived in the Sandwich
    Islands, later Hawaii, (after 1820) they
    conflicted with commercial and naval interests.
  • The missionaries interposed themselves as friends
    of the Hawaiians and tried to protect them from
    victimization. At the same time, they worked
    strenuously to supplant native religion with
    Christian faith.
  • In both cases they played a large part in
    bringing Hawaii to United States' consciousness
    and eventually helped lead to its annexation in
    1900.

Native Population Decline
  • As with American Indians on the mainland, the
    Native Hawaiian population was wiped out with the
    arrival of white settlers.
  • Diseases such as small pox, measles and whooping
    cough were deadly to the native Hawaiians.
  • 1853, smallpox epidemic takes lives of over 5,000
    native Hawaiians
  • When the first Europeans arrived in 1778, the
    islands' population was an estimated 800,000 to 1
    million. By the time Queen Lili'uokalani was
    forced to abdicate her throne more than a century
    later, the Native Hawaiian population was 40,000.
  • Todays population of pure Hawaiian is estimated
    at less than 8,000. Part Hawaiian population is
    estimated to be around 255,000.

The Hawaiian Monarchythe Kamehameha Dynasty
  • Kamehameha The Great unifies all the Hawaiian
    Islands by1810, dies in 1819
  • Kamehameha II -Prince Liholiho abandons the
    kapu system in 1819.
  • Kamehameha III- 1839, Declaration of Rights and
    freedom of religion adopted. By 1840, he creates
    the first Constitution and by 1848, the social
    class is created.
  • Kamehameha IV- Tries to avoid trade with America
  • in fear of losing the nation to America.
  • Kamehameha V- 1863- 1872 Had no heir to
  • the throne, lead to the end of the
    Kamehameha
  • Dynasty
