3
RBM and IMCI Linkages
  • Actions taken
  • Framework for RBM/IMCI collaboration developed
  • Statement on the joint collaboration made at
    Abuja Conference
  • Joint meeting of RBM and IMCI Task Forces held
  • Scaling-up framework for implementation of RBM
and IMCI at country level developed

Joint meeting of IMCI RBM Task Forces
recommendations
  • Countries should accelerate implementation of
RBM/IMCI community activities and provide an
enabling environment to support mothers and other
    caregivers.
  • Approaches for reducing malaria and other
childhood diseases in the community should be
linked with and supported by the health
facilities. Regular supervision and provision of
incentives for community health workers will be
    necessary

Scaling up RBM/IMCI General operational
definition
  • Scaling up is the acceleration and expansion of
implementation of all components of RBM and IMCI
in ALL districts of a country to obtain maximum
impact on the reduction of morbidity and
mortality due to malaria, diarrhoea, pneumonia,
measles, malnutrition and HIV/AIDS in children
    under 5 years.

Strategy for scaling up RBM IMCI
  • Policy and enabling environment
  • Broaden partnerships
  • Advocacy and Resource Mobilisation
  • Capacity building
  • Strengthen health systems to support both Malaria
    Control and IMCI activities
  • Improve family and community practices

7
How to Scale-up RBM/IMCI implementation
  • Scale up Support for RBM and IMCI
  • Agree on a common National Framework and
    Strategic Plan which includes resource
    mobilization and management
  • Develop mechanisms for co-ordination and
    collaboration between relevant programmes,
    sectors and stakeholders

RBM/IMCI/AFRO
8
How to Scale-up e.g. Community Component
  • Policy on drug availability at community level
    and use by CHWs
  • Identify and involve main stakeholders at
    community level
  • Use cost and cost saving information for advocacy
e.g. reduced cost of treatment for families using
    ITNs
  • Enlarge target group for capacity building e.g.
    community leaders, private providers, women's
    organizations etc.
  • Strengthen the linkages between the communities
and the health system, and between the health
    system and other sectors

RBM/IMCI/AFRO
9
How to Scale-up implementation - Issues related
to Community Component
  • Use cost-recovery mechanisms to contribute to key
requirements at community level e.g. Bamako
    Initiative Acknowledge contribution of all
    partners including communities

CONCLUSION
  • Scaling up of RBM and IMCI implementation is
necessary if the Abuja targets are to be met
  • Scaling up RBM and IMCI implementation at the
country level will ensure an impact on child
    health in the African Region
  • Strong partnerships at all levels in countries is
necessary for scaling up RBM and IMCI
    implementation.
