13
Regular ? Honours ? Pre AP ? ????
14
Honours Vs Regular Sections
  • Honours courses are very different from regular
stream courses in terms of the expected level of
    performance, pacing, teaching strategies, higher
level analytical, critical and creative thinking,
    assessment and evaluation.
  • Students and parents accept any real or perceived
risks upon enrolment in honours courses.
  • Canadian Universities look only at top four core
academics for entry. (early entry based on grade
    11)
  • U.S. Universities look at everything backto
    grade 9 in some cases.
  • There are no honours courses in grade 12At this
    level it is Advanced Placement.

15
Pre AP Sections
  • These are courses which are designed to prepare
you for the AP 12 course
  • They incorporate AP material starting in Grade 10
  • In Grade 10 Science 10AP, Social Studies 10AP
  • Grade 11 Biology 11AP,Physics 11 AP (Honours
SocialStudies moves to AP Human Geo)

16
Advanced Placement (AP)Courses
  • Are the equivalent of a first year university
    course.
  • Are intended to guage readiness for university
    studies.
  • Are primarily important to students considering
    US colleges.
  • Students get credits towards BC graduation.
  • Tests are marked on 1-5 scale by College Board.
  • Tests marks are forwarded by student request to
post secondary institutions of the students
    choice.
  • Some students get bonus marks for GPA at some
post secondary schools. We build a .5 GPA bonus
in our studentranking system each year.
  • AP Examinable courses exist only at the Gr. 12
    level

17
Applying forHonours / Accelerated / pre AP
  • See the Head of Department in question (ie for
    Social Studies, see Ms. Hobson)

    thecourse
  • Students not accepted into thesesections will be
    asked to see their counselor.

18
Honours Accelerated Pre AP Agreement
  • Student and family accept all perceived risks.
  • It is possible to work harder, do more and get a
lower mark than a student in the regular course.
  • At the grade 11 level there isno bonus on GPA or
    awardsfor taking enriched courses.

19
The Criteria?
  • Criteria will be marks, teacher recommendation,
and performance in the course (effort mark, class
    motivation)
  • Performance in the current course is
critical.these are not sections to see if you
can manage the course or to motivate you.
  • In some courses (listed as H or A) there are
strict limits in these courses (we will notput
more than 22 in any of them)
  • Some courses (SS 10AP) have specialentrance
    criteria (see Ms. Hobson)

24
Math Principles or Essentials?
  • Research what you need on the websites of the
    universities.
  • Both work as a graduation credit
  • Principles designed for university to upper 30
of all students do you really need it?
  • Essentials 11 and 12 is a better fit than poor
    standing in Principles 11

25
Math Principles or Essentials?
  • Principles of Math 11 and 12 are very hard
    courses.
  • In fact, PM 12 is as difficult a course as there
    is any school, including APs.
  • Most students experience a full letter grade drop
i.e. have an 80 standing in Math 11, it is
common for this to drop to 73 in Math 12.
  • Be aware of this going in

26
External Courses
  • Many students will take external courses
through distance education, summer school etc.
  • For regular courses, the mark will be indicated
on the student transcript but it will be
designated as being taken outside of Collingwood
and it will not be counted for any Collingwood
activities (for example if the student gets 95
in Math 10 by correspondence, then it will show
on the transcript but it will not be used to
calculate the grade point average or in any
    calculations for awards etc.)
  • Provincially examinable courses (Math 10, Science
    10, English 10, SS 11, English 12, most grade 12
courses) taken externally will show the course
    mark and the government mark.
