Expected Family Contribution (EFC)
  • What is it?
  • It is the official federal figure (established
through Congress), that your family is expected
to contribute toward the students total cost of
school and living expenses for one year.
  • How is it determined?
  • The EFC is determined by the income and asset
information of the student, ( parents when
dependent), that is submitted on the FAFSA
    application.

23
Need Varies Based on Cost
24
The Quiz Show Answer is
The ultimate result of this effort is a 5-digit
number that represents the Expected Family
Contribution

Why Is All This Information Needed? The Federal
Philosophy
  • To the extent they are able, parents have the
primary responsibility to pay for their dependent
    childrens education
  • Students also have a responsibility to contribute
    to their educational costs
  • Families should be evaluated in their present
    financial condition
  • A familys ability to pay for educational costs
must be evaluated in an equitable and consistent
    manner, recognizing that special circumstances
can and do affect the ability to pay
