Chemical Formulas
  • The most common source for the name of an element
    is some property the element exhibits
  • A symbol may be used in place of the name of an
    element
  • The first letter of a symbol is always
    capitalized
  • Symbols consist of one, two, or three letters
  • Chemical formulas indicate the relative number of
    atoms of each element present in a compound
  • The structural formula for an organic compound
    can be used to determine its molecular formula
