Title: Conservation in the Built Environment

1
Conservation in the Built Environment
  • UD activity takes place within
  • - Newly built env.
  • - Existing built env.
  • To exercise informed judgment to identify the
areas to be retained and enhanced and should be
    redeveloped judgment levels
  • -layout access
  • -building repair and alteration
  • -aesthetic and culture

2
Concept of Conservation
  • It can be linked to the increasing pace of
widespread development and redevelopment in towns
and cities and the rapid development outward
pressure on the fringe of settlements
  • List of buildings of special Architectural or
Historic Interest which gave a measure of
    protection

3
To identify conservation areas
  • Legislation should take into account the need to
protect whole areas of the urban landscape
  • To draw the attention to the importance of the
spaces between buildings and the contribution of
groups of buildings that were not necessarily of
architectural or historic interest, to the
enclosure and definition of urban spaces
  • To develop a language by which people could
describe and assess the values and experience of
these areas. This will identify and evaluate
    conservation areas

4
Preservation OR Conservation
  • Preservation
  • Buildings and areas should be retained in their
original state, regardless of the need to adapt
to changing circumstances in order to ensure
their survival without massive government aid.
  • Conservation
  • To reflect the dynamic rather than static nature
    of protecting the historic environment
  • It is preservation and enhancement

5
Organizations
  • International
  • UNESCO to register of World Heritage Sites
  • Regional
  • Organization of Islamic States Muslim Heritage
    sites
  • National and Local Level
  • AIA, RIBA, Omran, ..

Defining character appearance
  • To decide on the eligibility of an area for
conservation designation, we need to examine the
    meaning of character
  • It is that quality which emanates from the fusion
of topography and built form, geology and
    traditional building materials, street patterns,
and the grain and boundaries which reflect past
    ownerships.
  • An areas character is experienced through its
townscape a network of spaces, both modest and
grand, intimate or exposed, revealing views to
landmarks or glimpses to secluded alleys and
    courts.

7
Defining character appearance
  • The pattern of uses and activities is crucial to
defining the character of an area and yet this is
    not always given enough emphasis.
  • Character is sounds and smiles as well as sight.
A place can gain character with the passage of
time when people have been able to alter and
    adapt it.
  • Appearance related to the visual qualities of
the area, style and proportions of the buildings,
    their color and materials, attractiveness,
    relationship between buildings, landscape, ..

Components (parts) of Character

  • Design control in conservation areas
  • Infill in conservation areas
