  • This is the first checklist for an entire region
of Brazil and is one of the main results of the
    Programa Plantas do Nordeste (PNE).
  • PNE is a programme of international cooperation
    between universities, research institutes and
    non-governmental organizations in the Brazilian
Northeast region and the Royal Botanic Gardens,
    Kew, in the UK.

4
objectives of the checklist
  • present a list of angiosperm and gymnosperm
    species native to Northeast Brazil
  • standardize and update the scientific names
    adopted in the region
  • enlarge the knowledge of the regional and
Brazilian flora and provide a means to help in
    identifying these plants.

5
The construction of the list
  • publication in 1996 of a literature-based
preliminary checklist (Barbosa et al. 1996) with
approximately 7 thousand names, which compiled
the names of all the species of angiosperms which
had been cited for the region in some way.

6
  • 1998 - list imported into a database in Alice
software and general revision of the nomenclature
    of the genera and species.
  • Data on geographic distribution found in
bibliographic references and common names were
    incorporated.
  • 1999 incorporation of new records of species,
extracted from the Flora Neotropica monographs
    and other taxonomic revisions.
  • Each name was classified as provisional ( P) or
accepted (A), based on the reliability of the
    original bibliographic reference.
  • 2000 contact with specialists with the
objective of revising and referencing the list of
species. More than 120 specialists have
contributed to the revision of the list.
  • The corrections were incorporated into the
database and the authorship of each family
    credited to the respective specialists.
  • Information is available online
    (www.cnip.org.br).

  • The largest families in number of species are
    Leguminosae, Orchidaceae, Asteraceae, Poaceae
    and Rubiaceae.
  • average 100 increase of the knowledge
  • (compared with Barbosa et al., 1996).
