New Towns

The Plan
  • In the 1950s and 1960s five new towns were built
to try and ease Scotlands housing crisis.
  • This was a bold and imaginative idea but was very
    expensive.
  • The following are features the towns have in
    common.

3
Features
  • Traffic management
  • Variety in housing
  • Planned
  • Shopping centres
  • Jobs
  • Overspill population
  • Industrial estates
  • Leisure facilities

4
East Kilbride
  • East Kilbride grew from a small village of around
900 inhabitants to become a large burgh in 1930.
  • After the Second World War Glasgow was suffering
from chronic shortages of housing, which were in
part due to bomb damage from the war.
  • Before the war, the city was suffering from
    overcrowding and poor housing conditions,
particularly in areas such as the Gorbals.
  • The Clyde Valley Regional Plan 1946 picked sites
where new towns were to be built to help
alleviate the problem through an overspill
    agreement.
  • East Kilbride was the first new town to be
    designated in 1947

5
Shopping
  • The town is occupied by a large shopping centre
    comprising 6 linked malls.
  • This holds the title of largest indoor shopping
centre in Scotland and 10th largest in Europe

6
Other new towns
  • The five new towns have been very successful.
  • They are
  • Irvine
  • East Kilbride
  • Cumbernauld
  • Glenrothes
  • Livingstone
