Our Plan
  • Construct an Induction based flywheel.
  • We are going to build this using Faradays Law
    and Lenzs Law
  • During the 5 minute standing time the only losses
will be to inefficiency in the bearings.

What is this system going to look like?

6
How the flywheel will work
7
What is the commutator?
  • Changes field direction from each coil to insure
the motor is always experiencing a magnetic
torque that will keep it rotating.
  • Three separate plates that are attached to the
different induction coils cause the current to
move through the coils in different directions.
  • Brushes are attached to take the current from the
    solar panel to the flywheel

9
How is the flywheel started?
  • Essentially building an electric motor

Using a Emf of 12 volts, assuming there are 100
coils of wire, a magnetic field of 1 x 10 -3 T,
and a surface area of .375 m. The calculated
angular velocity of the flywheel will be 320
radians per second. This is approximately a speed
of 3060 RPM.

Applications
  • In supplying components and machines with high
output voltages when there is a power surge or a
    shutdown
  • Currently NASA for Aerospace Flywheel Development
Program is using flywheels in storing energy
more efficiently and Improvements in Pointing
    Control

Flywheel by NASA
  • On December 2000, Research engineers at NASA
Glenn Research Center and at U.S. Flywheel
Systems, Inc achieved full-speed operation at
    60,000 revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • On the International Space Station, electricity
from solar arrays will run the motor that spins
the wheel. Then, during the shade period of the
orbit, the spinning wheel will turn the motor,
now acting as generator, to make the electricity
that powers science equipment and life support
    systems.
