Chesapeake Bay Phytoplankton Index of Biotic
Integrity

2
History of Phyto IBI Development
  • 1998-2001 water quality reference conditions
established by means of MANOVA and canonical
    discriminant analysis and best phytoplankton
    indicators detected by stepwise discriminant
    analysis.
  • 2001-2002 water quality binning technique using
DIN, PO4 and secchi depth classifies each data
    point and associated phytoplankton parameters
analyzed for discriminatory strength by looking
at the spread and overlap between 25th and 75th
percentiles amongst the different water quality
    categories.
  • 2002-2003 expanded the array of phytoplankton
parameters used in association with the water
    quality binning technique.

Next (and Final) Steps
  • May 1 - Meet with Dr. Buchanan to analyze spring
results and complete spring parameter selection
    and threshold development
  • May 03 - Run verification tests on spring data
to test for predictability of IBI vs water
    quality binning categories
  • May 03 - Write up results as part of MDDNR
    Level I report
  • July 03 - Submit manuscript describing
Chesapeake Bay Phytoplankton IBI and its
    application Baywide
