1
Critique of Judgmentby Immanuel Kant
  • Presented by Dwayne Duquesnay
  • And
  • Natalie Collins

2
The Judgment of the Beautiful
  • What kind of judgment are we giving when we say,
    that is a beautiful painting?
  • Kant argues that such aesthetic judgments must
    have four distinguishing features disinterested,
necessary, universal, and purposive without a
    purpose.

3
Judgment of beauty
  • Instead of believing that beauty is in the eye of
the beholder, man would argue their opinion
making everyone else agree with them. Kant argued
that having these types of feelings towards your
aesthetic judgments is part of common sense, and
that there was no objective thing that could make
    an object beautiful.
  • Beauty is the form of purposive ness of an
object, so far as this is perceived in it without
    any representation of a purpose.

4
Discussion Questions
  • According to Kant, there are four distinguishing
features that make up a judgment of beauty. What
    are they?

5
  • What is one way that Kants view on the sublime
    agrees with Burkes.
