Virtual classroom
  • Virtual classrooms are web-based systems that
    deliver educational courses. In virtual
classrooms students develop ideas, debate issues,
and pose questions in both synchronous and
    asynchronous discussion rooms. They also
collaborate on research and writing projects,
download assignments, upload homework, check the
syllabus, read lecture material, and much more.

4
Tasks under study
  • Check schedule/syllabus of a particular course
  • Check assignments for a particular day

Dimensions-LS
  • LS is easy to use/learn for reaching Schedule
    but presents visual distractions. Visual
    distractions interfere with cognitive processing.
  • It takes an uncomfortable number of mouse clicks
    to reach the target information.

19
Dimensions-LS
  • For reaching Assignments, one needs to navigate
through Course Room (!). This is not intuitive,
    represents inefficient information encoding and
    needs to be memorized.
  • Data entry is allowed in the form of ASCII text
in the box provided. Retrieval of a submitted
assignment needs to be negotiated via Course
    Room, Assignments, Students, Week n.
  • Short-term (perceptual input) and working
(generate and implement solutions) memories are
    unduly loaded.

20
Dimensions-SB
  • Not intuitive. Cannot easily navigate.
  • Learning by trial and errorthus error prone.
  • Icons and links relatively smallvisual strain.
  • Manipulation/ navigation through multiple steps.
  • Memorization of steps required.
  • Load on working memory (recognition is usually
    better than recall).
  • Data entry/ homework submission cannot paste
    text. Can only submit attachments.
