Geometry and MeasurementsPages 263-289
5
Geometric Annotation
  • (Table on page 265)

6
Vocabulary Reminder
  • Perimeter outside edge of an object
  • Area space inside shape
  • Vertices end-points of a line,
  • or a corner of a polygon

7
Parallel Lines
  • a d e h a b 180
  • b c f g a c 180, etc.
  • Alternate interior, corresponding, vertical, and
    alternate exterior are all congruent
  • Linear pairs and adjacent interior are
    supplementary

8
Slope of a Line
  • Slope Rise over Run
  • (change in y over change in x)
  • Positive if the line travels upwards
  • (from left to right)
  • Negative if the line travels downward
  • (from left to right)
  • Zero the line is flat, parallel to the x-axis
  • Undefined vertical, parallel to the y-axis

9
Lines
  • Parallel Lines Slope is the same, y-intercepts
    are different numbers
  • Example y 3x 2 and y 3x 5
  • Perpendicular Lines upside down and backwards
the slope is the inverse with the opposite sign
  • Example y 3x 2 and y -1/3x 5
  • Lines Tangent to a circle touch the circle at
a single point, and are perpendicular to the
    radius of the circle.

10
Formulas to Memorize
  • Midpoint Formula
  • Distance Formula
  • (Based on the Pythagorean Theorem)

11
Triangles
  • Interior angles add up to 180
  • Equilateral all 3 sides are equal, all
    angles equal 60
  • Isosceles 2 sides are equal, 2 angles are equal
  • Triangle Inequality The sum of the lengths of
any 2 sides of a triangle is greater than
the length of the third side.

12
Right Triangles
  • These ratios are important to remember!

13
Pythagorean Triples
  • Pythagorean Theorem a2 b2 c2
  • Note c is always the hypotenuse (longest side)
and this only works for a right triangle.
  • Pythagorean Triples Famous Right Triangles.
  • Know these well!
  • (3,4,5) (5,12,13)
  • (8,12,13) (7,24,25)
  • Be able to recognize multiples ex. (6,8,10)

14
Polygon Information
  • Parallelogram Opposite angles are equal and
opposite sides are parallel and equal (area
    length x height)
  • Regular Polygons all sides are equal in length.
To determine the number of degrees in a polygon,
cut it into triangles and multiply the number
    of triangles by 180.
  • Square the diagonal of a square is the square
root of two times the length of the side
    (45-45-90).

15
Surface Area of a Rectangular Prism
  • A rectangular prism has six rectangular faces.
Opposite faces have the same area.
  • The surface area of a rectangular prism l x w x h
    is SA 2(lw) 2(lh) 2(wh)

16
Surface Area of a Cube
  • A cube is a special rectangular prism where all
    the sides have equal length.
  • SA 6s2
  • Where s represents the length of the side

17
Volume of a Cylinder
18
Volume of a Cone
19
  • A salesmans monthly gross pay consists of 1,200
plus 20 percent of the dollar amount of his
sales. If his gross pay for one month was 2,500,
what was the dollar amount of his sales for that
    month?

  • A certain scale only measures weights that are
greater than 6 pounds. A person who wanted to
know the weights of a puppy, a kitten, and a
bunny weighed them in pairs and got the following
    results
  • The kitten and bunny weighed 7 pounds
  • The kitten and the puppy weighed 8 pounds
  • The bunny and the puppy weighed 9 pounds
  • What is the weight of the puppy?
  • 2 pounds D) 5 pounds
  • 3 pounds E) 6 pounds
  • 4 pounds

  • The Smith Metal Companys old machine makes 300
bolts per hour. Its new machine makes 450 bolts
per hour. If both machines begin running at the
same time, how many minutes will it take the two
machines to make a total of 900 bolts?
