History and Organization
1) ECFA 2001 Report The Future of
Accelerator-based Particle Physics in Europe
an improved educational programme in the field
of accelerator physics and increased support for
accelerator RD activity in European
universities, national facilities and CERN
2) Absence of HEP in the FP of the EU
http//esgard.lal.in2p3.fr
The ESGARD should develop a proposal to optimize
and enhance the outcome of the Research and
Technical Development in the field of accelerator
physics in Europe by q       promoting mutual
coordination and facilitating the pooling of
European resources q       promoting a coherent
and coordinated utilization and development of
infrastructures q       promoting
inter-disciplinary collaboration including
industry  This proposal is aimed at preparing and
conducting a coherent set of bids to apply for EU
funding in the 6th Framework Programme.

Accelerator RD projects
  • ESGARD Strategy
  • Develop a general multipurpose program
  • From which specific projects would emerge

4
CARE Coordinated Accelerator Research in Europe
http//care.lal.in2p3.fr
CARE has demonstrated that the ESGARD
objective (i.e. carrying Accelerator Research by
integrating the European resources in a
collaborative mode as we are used to do for
detectors) is getting a reality

Total gt117 M 33.2 M
  • These projects are well structured, with clear
    objectives, deliverables
  • and milestones. They represent a fantastic
    strength
  • for the HEP European community in order to play a
    leadership role
  • In the improvement of present accelerators
  • In the development of new accelerators

Next Steps
Short term applications (FP6)
NEST calls (New Emerging Science and Technology)
3 projects submitted, one has been selected for a
second stage evaluation
Project Topics Duration Years Total Cost EU contribution
EUROLEAP Plasma acceleration 3 4.1 M 2 M
The goal is to produce electron beams in the GeV
energy range, with an energy spread less than 1,
in a reproducible way over a distance less than
10 cm.
11
Next Steps
Long term (FP7)
  • Two proposed main lines of action
  • Continuation and improvement of the current
    (mainly bottom-up) approach
  • for optimizing the access to and the utilization
    and performance
  • of existing infrastructures
  • Implementation of a strategic approach
  • for developing future infrastructures of
    pan-European interest
  • (incl. major upgrades)

ESFRI will develop a roadmap for construction of
new RIs for the next 10-20 years
  • 3 Steering Groups are being set up
  • Physical Sciences and Engineering
  • Biological and Medical Sciences
  • Social Sciences and Humanities

Establish a list of infrastructure to be
supported by the EC (list of opportunities)

Conclusions
This past 2 years were very busy and successful
with
  • A strategy for developing accelerator RD has
    been set up
  • Good relation with the EC have been established
  • Getting ready for the short term developments

A multipurpose research program exists, It is
well established and visible in the HEP and EU
landscape
  • Preparing the longer term

Specific programs for Design Studies approved
and
  • Developing novel acceleration technology

EUROLEAP
In the evaluation process
For the longer term, the preparation to FP7 and
to its calls is on our agenda
