  • Was Jesus actually around before the virgin
    birth?

Incarnation means to become flesh, to have
Spirit (God) dwell in something physical

Pre-incarnation described in the NT
  • Reference Notes
  • Colossians 115-20 He is the image of the
    invisible God
  • Philippians 24-11 Christ being in very nature
    God
  • John 11-18 In the beginning was the Word, and
the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
  • John 857-59 Before Abraham was, I am
  • Hebrews 6,7 Christ as a priest forever in the
    order of Melchizedek.
  • Colossians 115-19 gives us a wealth of
information regarding the nature of the
    pre-incarnate Christ, including
  • He is the image of the invisible God
  • the firstborn over all creation
  • by him all things were created
  • He is the head of the church
  • Gods fullness dwelled in him

New Testament references to Jesus in the Old
Testament
  • The most important verses in the New Testament in
terms of helping us search for a pre-incarnate
Christ in the Old Testament are in the first
chapter of the Gospel of John. Of special
    interest in these passages
  • 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was
with God, and the Word was God. 2He was with God
    in the beginning.
  • 3Through him all things were made without him
nothing was made that has been made. 4In him was
life, and that life was the light of men. 5The
light shines in the darkness, but the darkness
    has not understood it
  • 14The Word became flesh and made his dwelling
among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of
the One and Only, who came from the Father, full
    of grace and truth.
  • 15John testifies concerning him. He cries out,
saying, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who
comes after me has surpassed me because he was
before me.'" 16From the fullness of his grace we
have all received one blessing after another.
17For the law was given through Moses grace and
truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has
ever seen God, but God the One and Only, who is
at the Father's side, has made him known. (from
    John 11-18)
  • We see
  • Christ is God, and was with God in the beginning
  • All things were made through Christ (creation)
  • Christ became flesh (incarnate) and dwelled among
    humans
  • No one has ever seen God, but Christ has made him
    known to us

What does the OT say?
7
What does the OT say?The Angel of the
Lord There are several apparent places in the
Old Testament where the Lord (Yahweh) himself,
appearing in the form of an angel, seems to be
speaking directly to a human (as opposed to using
an angel as an intermediary).  Such passages
often begin with "The Angel of the
Lord..." Many evangelical scholars view that
"The Angel of the Lord" could be a pre-incarnate
Christ.
8
Generally agreed pre-appearances
9
The Lord and Hagar
  • One of the first examples in the Bible comes in
Gen 167-13, when the angel of the LORD appears
    to Hagar.
  • 7The angel of the LORD found Hagar near a spring
in the desert it was the spring that is beside
the road to Shur. 8And he said, "Hagar, servant
of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are
you going?"  "Im running away from my mistress
    Sarai," she answered.
  • 9Then the angel of the LORD told her, "Go back to
your mistress and submit to her." 10The angel
added, "I will so increase your descendants that
they will be too numerous to count."
  • 11The angel of the LORD also said to her  "You
are now with child and you will have a son.  You
shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard of
your misery.  12He will be a wild donkey of a
man his hand will be against everyone and
everyones hand against him, and he will live in
    hostility toward all his brothers."
  • 13She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to
her "You are the God who sees me," for she said,
"I have now seen the One who sees me." (Gen
    167-13)
  • Two clues that this might be the pre-incarnate
    Christ
  • The angel says, I will so increase your
descendants that they will be too numerous to
count. something that only God could say.
  • We are told that Hagar gave this name to the
LORD who spoke to her You are the God who sees
    me

10
Abrams near sacrifice
  • In Genesis 2211-12,
  • 11But the angel of the LORD called out to him
from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!"  "Here I am," he
    replied.
  • "12Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do
not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear
God, because you have not withheld from me your
    son, your only son."
  •
  • Another example follows several verses later in
Gen 2215-18.  This time, the angel of the LORD
    calls to Abraham from heaven
  • 15The angel of the LORD called to Abraham from
heaven a second time 16and said, "I swear by
myself", declares the LORD, "that because you
have done this and have not withheld your son,
your only son, 17I will surely bless you and make
your descendants as numerous as the stars in the
sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your
descendants will take possession of the cities of
their enemies, 18and through your offspring all
nations on earth will be blessed, because you
    have obeyed me." (Gen 2215-18)

11
Moses
  • In Exodus 32-6, we have perhaps the most famous
example of God talking to a human, in the
incident of Moses and the burning bush.  We
almost reflexively assume that this is God the
Father talking, yet, the passage starts out with
There the angel of the LORD appeared to him.
And remember, in the New Testament, Jesus said
Before Abraham was, I AM (John 8 57-59)
  • 2There the angel of the LORD appeared to him in
flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that
though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.
3So Moses thought, "I will go over and see this
strange sightwhy the bush does not burn up."
  • 4When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look,
God called to him from within the bush, "Moses!
Moses!"  And Moses said, "Here I am."
  • "5Do not come any closer," God said. "Take off
your sandals, for the place where you are
standing is holy ground." 6Then he said, "I am
the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the
God of Isaac and the God of Jacob." At this,
Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look
    at God.  (Exodus 32-6)
  • 13Moses said to God, Suppose I go to the
Israelites and say to them, The God of your
fathers has sent me to you, and they ask me,
What is his name? Then what shall I tell
them?"  14God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM. This
is what you are to say to the Israelites I AM
has sent me to you."  (Exodus 313-14)

12
I brought you up out of Egypt
  • In Judges 21-2
  • 1The angel of the LORD went up from Gilgal to
Bokim and said, I brought you up out of Egypt
and led you into the land that I swore to give to
your forefathers. I said, 'I will never break my
covenant with you, 2and you shall not make a
covenant with the people of this land, but you
shall break down their altars. Yet you have
disobeyed me. Why have you done this?"  (Judges
    21-2)
  • John Wesley explicitly identifies the angel as
    Christ
  • The angel Christ the angel of the covenant,
often called the angel of the Lord, to whom the
conduct of Israel out of Egypt into Canaan,
is frequently ascribed. He alone could speak the
following words in his own name and person
whereas created angels and prophets universally
usher in their message with, Thus saith the Lord,
or some equivalent expression. And this angel
having assumed the shape of a man, it is not
strange that he imitates the motion of a man...
(John Wesleys Notes On The Whole Bible The Old
    Testament, Judges 25)

13
Gideon
  • In Judges 611-23, Gideon speaks to the angel of
the LORD, who is clearly God speaking.  Again
since we are told elsewhere that God the Father
is invisible to humans, we might assume that
Gideon is speaking to a pre-incarnate Christ.
This is further backed by the end of these
passages.  When Gideon realizes to whom he has
been talking, he is afraid he is going to die
Ah, Sovereign LORD! I have seen the angel of the
    LORD face to face!
  • However, it seems humans can talk to Christ
    face-to-face with no ill effects!
  • 11The angel of the LORD came and sat down under
the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the
Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing
wheat in a winepress to keep it from the
Midianites.  12When the angel of the LORD
appeared to Gideon, he said, "The LORD is with
    you, mighty warrior."
  • "13But sir," Gideon replied, "if the LORD is with
us, why has all this happened to us? Where are
all his wonders that our fathers told us about
when they said, Did not the LORD bring us up out
of Egypt? But now the LORD has abandoned us and
put us into the hand of Midian.
  • 14The LORD turned to him and said, "Go in the
strength you have and save Israel out of Midians
hand. Am I not sending you?"  15"But Lord",
Gideon asked, "how can I save Israel? My clan is
the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my
    family".
  • 16The LORD answered, "I will be with you, and you
will strike down all the Midianites together."
17Gideon replied, "If now I have found favor in
your eyes, give me a sign that it is really you
talking to me.  18Please do not go away until I
come back and bring my offering and set it before
you."  And the LORD said, "I will wait until you
    return".
  • 19Gideon went in, prepared a young goat, and from
an ephah of flour he made bread without yeast.
Putting the meat in a basket and its broth in a
pot, he brought them out and offered them to him
    under the oak.
  • 20The angel of God said to him, "Take the meat
and the unleavened bread, place them on this
rock, and pour out the broth". And Gideon did so.
21With the tip of the staff that was in his hand,
the angel of the LORD touched the meat and the
unleavened bread. Fire flared from the rock,
consuming the meat and the bread. And the angel
of the LORD disappeared. 22When Gideon realized
that it was the angel of the LORD, he exclaimed,
"Ah, Sovereign LORD! I have seen the angel of the
    LORD face to face!"
  • 23But the LORD said to him, "Peace! Do not be
afraid. You are not going to die."  (Judges
    611-23)

14
The LORD rebuke you, Satan
  • Our final example comes much later in the Bible,
in Zechariah 31-10, when the angel of the LORD
rebukes Satan.  Notice in the last two verses, it
is no longer the angel of the LORD talking, but
the LORD (or, a pre-incarnate Christ).
  •
  • 1Then he showed me Joshua the high priest
standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan
standing at his right side to accuse him. 2The
LORD said to Satan, The LORD rebuke you, Satan!
The LORD, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke you!
Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the
    fire?
  • 3Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he
stood before the angel. 4The angel said to those
who were standing before him, "Take off his
filthy clothes."  Then he said to Joshua, "See, I
have taken away your sin, and I will put rich
    garments on you."
  • 5Then I said, "Put a clean turban on his head."
So they put a clean turban on his head and
clothed him, while the angel of the LORD stood
    by.
  • 6The angel of the LORD gave this charge to
Joshua 7 This is what the LORD Almighty says
If you will walk in my ways and keep my
requirements, then you will govern my house and
have charge of my courts, and I will give you a
    place among these standing here.
  • 8Listen, O high priest Joshua and your
associates seated before you, who are men
symbolic of things to come I am going to bring
my servant, the Branch. 9See, the stone I have
set in front of Joshua! There are seven eyes on
that one stone, and I will engrave an inscription
on it, says the LORD Almighty, and I will
remove the sin of this land in a single day.
  • 10In that day each of you will invite his
neighbor to sit under his vine and fig tree,
declares the LORD Almighty.  (Zechariah 31-10)

15
Other suggested appearances
16
Jesus in Creation
  • Some scholars view that Christ appears in the
first chapter of the first book of the Bible
Genesis.  Calvin in his liner notes for the
Geneva Bible thought so.  The verse in question
is Genesis 13, which God states And God said,
Let there be light, and there was light.
Here, God spoke, and John identifies that the
pre-incarnate Christ is the logos or Word of
God.  There is also the connection of God
speaking with the creation of light, which
appears in the first chapter of the Gospel of
    John, also.
  •
  • 1In the beginning God created the heavens and the
earth. 2Now the earth was formless and empty,
darkness was over the surface of the deep, and
the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
3And God said, "Let there be light, and there
    was light."  (Genesis 11-3)
  • Genesis 126 Let US make man in OUR image, in
    OUR likeness

17
Jesus with Abram?
  • Genesis 18 features numerous examples of the LORD
speaking directly to Abraham.  It starts with an
explicit mention of the fact that The LORD
appeared to Abram in the form of three men
standing nearby.  One could surmise that one or
all of the three men were the pre-incarnate
    Christ, appearing to a human.
  • 1The LORD appeared to Abraham near the great
trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the
entrance to his tent in the heat of the day.
2Abraham looked up and saw three men standing
nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the
entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low
to the ground. (Genesis 18 1-2)
  • Again, whenever he manifested himself to the
fathers, Christ was the Mediator between him and
them who not only personates God in proclaiming
his word, but is also truly and essentially God.

18
 Jacob wrestles with Jesus
  • In Genesis 32 24-30, Jacob wrestles with a man
that turns out to be God.  Like Gideon, Jacob is
astonished that I saw God face to face, and yet
my life was spared.  Again, assuming that Father
God cant be seen be humans, a case could be made
that this is the pre-incarnate Christ.
  • 24So Jacob was left alone, and a man wrestled
with him till daybreak. 25When the man saw that
he could not overpower him, he touched the socket
of Jacobs hip so that his hip was wrenched as he
wrestled with the man. 26Then the man said, "Let
me go, for it is daybreak."
  • But Jacob replied, "I will not let you go unless
    you bless me."
  • 27The man asked him, "What is your name?"
  • "Jacob," he answered.
  • 28Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be
Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled
with God and with men and have overcome."
  • 29Jacob said, "Please tell me your name."
  • But he replied, "Why do you ask my name?" Then he
    blessed him there.
  • 30So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying, "It
is because I saw God face to face, and yet my
life was spared."  (Genesis 32 24-30)

19
Joshua meets Jesus as the commander of the LORDS
Army
  • Joshua 513-62 is an interesting set of verses,
since it refers to The commander of the LORDS
army as speaking to Joshua.  This has
    interesting parallels to Revelation 1911-16,
which describes the Second Coming of Jesus Christ
(and may refer to the battle of Armageddon).
  • It could be argued that the 2nd verse of Joshua 6
(which starts Then the LORD said to Joshua) is
not connected to the appearance of the commander
of the Lords army after all, it is in a new
chapter, and Joshua 61 appears to start a new
topic.  However, remember that chapter and verse
designations in the Bible were a Medieval
invention, and Joshua 61 can simply be referring
to the reason the commander of Gods army was
talking to Joshua in the first place.
  • An alternative interpretation is that the
commander of Gods army is Michael the Archangel,
but Michael the Archangel is certainly not the
    commander in Revelation 1911-16.
  • 13Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up
and saw a man standing in front of him with a
drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him
and asked, "Are you for us or for our enemies?"
  • "14Neither," he replied, "but as commander of the
army of the LORD I have now come." Then Joshua
fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and
asked him, "What message does my Lord have for
    his servant?"
  • 15The commander of the LORDS army replied, "Take
off your sandals, for the place where you are
standing is holy." And Joshua did so.
  • 1Now Jericho was tightly shut up because of the
Israelites. No one went out and no one came in.
  • 2Then the LORD said to Joshua, "See, I have
delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its
king and its fighting men."  (Joshua 513-62)
  • Both John Calvin and John Wesley equated the
commander of Gods army with Christ
  • 14. As captain I am the chief captain of this
people, and will conduct and assist thee and them
in this great undertaking. Now this person is not
a created angel, but the son of God, who went
along with the Israelites in this expedition, as
their chief and captain. And this appears, 1. By
his acceptance of adoration here, which a created
angel durst not admit of, Revelation 228, 9. 2.
Because the place was made holy by his presence,
Joshua 515, which was Gods prerogative, Exodus
    35. 3. Because he is called the Lord, Hebrews.
Jehovah, Joshua 62. My Lord I acknowledge thee
for my Lord and captain, and therefore wait for
thy commands, which I am ready to obey. (John
Wesleys Notes On The Whole Bible The Old
    Testament, Joshua 5)

20
Jesus appears with Shadrach, Meshack, and
Abednego
  • Perhaps the most stunning potential appearance of
Christ in the Old Testament appears in Daniel 3,
in the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.
After being thrown into a fiery furnace by
    Nebuchadnezzar, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego
are saved by a mysterious stranger who is
described as like a son of the gods.  Of
course, Jesus is referred to often in the New
Testament as the Son of God.
  • 19Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach,
Meshach and Abednego, and his attitude toward
them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven
times hotter than usual 20and commanded some of
the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up
Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them
into the blazing furnace. 21So these men, wearing
their robes, trousers, turbans and other clothes,
were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace.
22The kings command was so urgent and the
furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed
the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach and
Abednego, 23and these three men, firmly tied,
    fell into the blazing furnace.
  • 24Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in
amazement and asked his advisers, "Werent there
three men that we tied up and threw into the
fire?"  They replied, "Certainly, O king."
  • 25He said, "Look! I see four men walking around
in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth
looks like a son of the gods."  (Daniel 3 19-29,
    emphasis added)
  • Calvin didnt think the mysterious stranger was
Christ he thought it was an angel.  Wesley,
however, strongly associated the stranger with
    Christ.

21
  • Not only were there sightings of Jesus throughout
the OT, but God revealed much of His plan for
Jesus to become a man to many people. With
various different writers and gaps in time, they
still compiled a long detailed list describing
    the coming of the Messiah.
  • Messiah refers to a future King of Israel from
the Davidic line, who will rule the people of
united tribes of Israel. Literally means the
    anointed King

24
What did the Prophets say about the coming
Messiah?
  • What is a prophecy?
  • A prophecy is the future told in advance by God
through a prophet, or a statement of a present
condition of people, usually involving a chance
    for repentance and redemption.

25
  • Isaiah 482-5 3 I foretold the former things
long ago, my mouth announced them and I made them
known then suddenly I acted, and they came to
pass. 4 For I knew how stubborn you were the
sinews of your neck were iron, your forehead was
bronze. 5 Therefore I told you these things
long ago before they happened I announced them
to you so that you could not say, My idols did
them my wooden image and metal god ordained
    them.'
  • "Isn't 'fulfilled prophecy' just a guess or luck
    or coincidence?"
  • 2 Peter 119-21  19 And we have the word of the
prophets made more certain, and you will do well
to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in
a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning
star rises in your hearts. 20 Above all, you
must understand that no prophecy of Scripture
came about by the prophet's own interpretation.
21 For prophecy never had its origin in the
will of man, but men spoke from God as they were
carried along by the Holy Spirit.

26
Lots of prophecies about Jesus
27
Lots of prophecies about Jesus
  • The Old Testament contains about FOUR HUNDRED AND
    TWENTY-FIVE prophecies about the Messiah.
  • Here are a few

28
  • GOD WOULD COME TO EARTH, BE BORN AS A HUMAN MALE
  • Isaiah 96-7 6 For to us a child is born, to us
a son is given, and the government will be on his
shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful
Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince
of Peace. 7 Of the increase of his government
and peace there will be no end. He will reign on
David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing
and upholding it with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever. ...  700 B.C.
  • Mark 11 The beginning of the gospel about Jesus
    Christ, the Son of God.
  • John 11-3, 14 1 In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through
him all things were made without him nothing was
made that has been made.  14 The Word became
flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have
seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only,
who came from the Father, full of grace and
    truth.

29
BORN OF A VIRGIN
  • Isaiah 714 Therefore the Lord himself will give
you a sign The virgin will be with child and
will give birth to a son, and will call him
    Immanuel.  700 B.C.
  • Mattthew 120-23 20 But after he had considered
this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a
dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be
afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because
what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
21 She will give birth to a son, and you are
to give him the name Jesus, because he will save
his people from their sins."  22 All this took
place to fulfill what the Lord had said through
the prophet 23 "The virgin will be with child
and will give birth to a son, and they will call
him Immanuel" --which means, "God with us."

FROM THE ROOT AND STUMP OF JESSE
  • Isaiah 1110 In that day the Root of Jesse will
stand as a banner for the peoples the nations
will rally to him, and his place of rest will be
    glorious.  700 B.C.
  • Isaiah 111-5 1 A shoot will come up from the
stump of Jesse from his roots a Branch will bear
fruit. 2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on
him-- the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of
knowledge and of the fear of the LORD-- 3 and
he will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will
not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or
decide by what he hears with his ears 4 but
with righteousness he will judge the needy, with
justice he will give decisions for the poor of
the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod
of his mouth with the breath of his lips he will
slay the wicked. 5 Righteousness will be his
belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist.
     700 B.C.
  • Romans 1512 And again, Isaiah says, "The Root of
Jesse will spring up, one who will arise to rule
over the nations the Gentiles will hope in him."

32
FROM THE HOUSE OF DAVID
  • Isaiah 165 In love a throne will be established
in faithfulness a man will sit on it--one from
the house of David--one who in judging seeks
justice and speeds the cause of righteousness.
     700 B.C.
  • Matthew 11-2A, 6, 16 1 A record of the
genealogy of Jesus Christ the son of David, the
son of Abraham 2 Abraham was the father of
Isaac, ... 6 and Jesse the father of King
David. 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph, the
husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is
    called Christ.

33
BORN IN BETHLEHEM EPHRATHAH
  • Micah 52 But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though
you are small among the clans of Judah, out of
you will come for me one who will be ruler over
Israel, whose origins are from of old, from
    ancient times.  700 B.C.
  • Matthew 21 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in
Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from
    the east came to Jerusalem

34
BE FROM NAZARETH OF GALILEE
  • Isaiah 91-2 1 Nevertheless, there will be no
more gloom for those who were in distress. In the
past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land
of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor
Galilee of the Gentiles, by the way of the sea,
along the Jordan -- 2 The people walking in
darkness have seen a great light on those living
in the land of the shadow of death a light has
    dawned.  700 B.C.
  • Matthew 222-23 22 But when he heard that
Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his
father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having
been warned in a dream, he withdrew to the
district of Galilee, 23 and he went and lived
in a town called Nazareth. So was fulfilled what
was said through the prophets "He will be called
    a Nazarene."
  • Matthew 413-16 13 Leaving Nazareth, he Jesus
went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the
lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali--
14 to fulfill what was said through the prophet
Isaiah  15 "Land of Zebulun and land of
Naphtali, the way to the sea, along the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles -- 16 the people living
in darkness have seen a great light on those
living in the land of the shadow of death a light
    has dawned."

35
HIS BIRTH WOULD TRIGGER A MASSACRE OF INFANT BOYS
  • Jeremiah 3115 This is what the LORD says "A
voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great
weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and
refusing to be comforted, because her children
    are no more."  625 B.C.
  • Matthew 216-18 16 When Herod realized that he
had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious,
and he gave orders to kill all the boys in
Bethlehem and its vicinity who were two years old
and under, in accordance with the time he had
learned from the Magi. 17 Then what was said
through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled
18 "A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and
great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children
and refusing to be comforted, because they are no
    more."
  • An interesting side note most people think that
Herod killed thousands of babies. However,
Bethlehem was "in the boondocks."  The chances
are that less than thirty babies were killed.

36
COME OUT OF EGYPT
  • Hosea 111  When Israel was a child, I loved him,
and out of Egypt I called my son.  725 B.C.
  • Matthew 214-15  14 So he got up, took the
child and his mother during the night and left
for Egypt, 15 where he stayed until the death
of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord had
said through the prophet "Out of Egypt I called
    my son."

37
  • MISSION WOULD INCLUDE THE GENTILES
  • Isaiah 496 he the Lord says "It is too small
a thing for you to be my servant to restore the
tribes of Jacob and bring back those of Israel I
have kept. I will also make you a light for the
Gentiles, that you may bring my salvation to the
ends of the earth." 700 B.C.
  • Isaiah 421-4, 6 1 "Here is my servant, whom I
uphold, my chosen one in whom I delight I will
put my Spirit on him and he will bring justice to
the nations. 2 He will not shout or cry out, or
raise his voice in the streets.  3 A bruised
reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he
will not snuff out.  In faithfulness he will
bring forth justice 4 he will not falter or be
discouraged till he establishes justice on earth.
In his law the islands will put their hope."
6 "I, the LORD, have called you in
righteousness I will take hold of your hand.  I
will keep you and will make you to be a covenant
for the people and a light for the Gentiles,
     700 B.C.
  • Matthew 1214-21 14 But the Pharisees went out
and plotted how they might kill Jesus. 15 Aware
of this, Jesus withdrew from that place. Many
followed him, and he healed all their sick,
16 warning them not to tell who he was.
17 This was to fulfill what was spoken through
the prophet Isaiah 18 "Here is my servant whom
I have chosen, the one I love, in whom I delight
I will put my Spirit on him, and he will proclaim
justice to the nations. 19 He will not quarrel
or cry out no one will hear his voice in the
streets. 20 A bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out, till
he leads justice to victory. 21 In his name the
    nations will put their hope."

38
MINISTRY WOULD INCLUDE MIRACULOUS HEALINGS
  • Isaiah 2918 In that day the deaf will hear the
words of the scroll, and out of gloom and
darkness the eyes of the blind will see.
     700 B.C.
  • Isaiah 355-6a 5 Then will the eyes of the
blind be opened and the ears of the deaf
unstopped.  6a Then will the lame leap like a
deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy.
     700 B.C.
  • Luke 720-22 20 When the men came to Jesus,
they said, "John the Baptist sent us to you to
ask, Are you the one who was to come, or should
we expect someone else?' " 21 At that very time
Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and
evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were
blind. 22 So he replied to the messengers, "Go
back and report to John what you have seen and
heard The blind receive sight, the lame walk,
those who have leprosy are cured, the deaf hear,
the dead are raised, and the good news is
    preached to the poor."

39
MINISTRY WOULD DELIVER SPIRITUAL CAPTIVES
  • Isaiah 611-2 1 The Spirit of the Sovereign
LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me
to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom
for the captives and release from darkness for
the prisoners, 2 to proclaim the year of the
LORD's favor and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,  700 B.C.
  • Luke 416-21 16 He went to Nazareth, where he
had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he
went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And
he stood up to read. 17 The scroll of the
prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it,
he found the place where it is written 18 "The
Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has
anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He
has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind, to release
the oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the
Lord's favor."  20 Then he rolled up the
scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat
down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were
fastened on him, 21 and he began by saying to
them, "Today this scripture is fulfilled in your
    hearing."

40
DESPISED AND REJECTED BY MEN
  • Isaiah 533 He was despised and rejected by men,
a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering.
Like one from whom men hide their faces he was
despised, and we esteemed him not.  700 B.C.
  • The Crucifixion narratives in all four Gospels
    show this prophecy fulfilled.

41
HATED WITHOUT CAUSE
  • Psalm 694 Those who hate me without reason
outnumber the hairs of my head many are my
enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy
me. I am forced to restore what I did not steal.
     1000 B.C.
  • Isaiah 497 This is what the LORD says-- the
Redeemer and Holy One of Israel-- to him who was
despised and abhorred by the nation, to the
servant of rulers "Kings will see you and rise
up, princes will see and bow down, because of the
LORD, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel,
who has chosen you."  700 B.C.
  • John 748-49 "Has any of the rulers or of the
Pharisees believed in him? 49 No! But this mob
that knows nothing of the law--there is a curse
    on them."
  • John 1524-25 24 If I had not done among them
what no one else did, they would not be guilty of
sin. But now they have seen these miracles, and
yet they have hated both me and my Father.
25 But this is to fulfill what is written in
their Law They hated me without reason.'

42
REJECTED BY RULERS
  • Psalm 11822 The stone the builders rejected has
become the capstone cornerstone of a building
23 the LORD has done this, and it is marvelous
in our eyes.  before 400 B.C.
  • Matthew 2142 Jesus said to them, "Have you never
read in the Scriptures" The stone the builders
rejected has become the capstone the Lord has
done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes' ?
  • John 748-49 Has any of the rulers or of the
Pharisees believed in him? 49 No! But this mob
that knows nothing of the law--there is a curse
    on them.

43
REJECTED BY HIS OWN BROTHERS
  • Psalms 698 I am a stranger to my brothers, an
alien to my own mother's sons  1000 B.C.
  • (Side note this pretty much kills the Catholic
Church's claim that when the Gospels name Jesus'
brothers they are talking about His cousins.)
  • Mark 320-21 20 Then Jesus entered a house, and
again a crowd gathered, so that he and his
disciples were not even able to eat. 21 When
his family heard about this, they went to take
charge of him, for they said, "He is out of his
    mind."
  • John 71-5 1 After this, Jesus went around in
Galilee, purposely staying away from Judea
because the Jews there were waiting to take his
life. 2 But when the Jewish Feast of
Tabernacles was near, 3 Jesus' brothers said to
him, "You ought to leave here and go to Judea, so
that your disciples may see the miracles you do.
4 No one who wants to become a public figure
acts in secret. Since you are doing these things,
show yourself to the world." 5 For even his own
brothers did not believe in him.

44
BETRAYED FOR 30 PIECES OF SILVER
  • Zechariah 1112 I told them, "If you think it
best, give me my pay but if not, keep it." So
they paid me thirty pieces of silver.  500 B.C.
  • Matthew 2614-15 14 Then one of the Twelve--the
one called Judas Iscariot--went to the chief
priests 15 and asked, "What are you willing to
give me if I hand him over to you?" So they
counted out for him thirty silver coins.
  • SILVER RETURNED
  • SILVER USED TO BUY POTTER'S FIELD
  • Zechariah 1112-13 12 I told them, "If you
think it best, give me my pay but if not, keep
it." So they paid me thirty pieces of silver.
13 And the LORD said to me, "Throw it to the
potter"--the handsome price at which they priced
me! So I took the thirty pieces of silver and
threw them into the house of the LORD to the
    potter.  500 B.C.
  • Matthew 273-10 3 When Judas, who had betrayed
him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized
with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins
to the chief priests and the elders. 4 "I have
sinned," he said, "for I have betrayed innocent
blood." "What is that to us?" they replied.
"That's your responsibility." 5 So Judas threw
the money into the temple and left. Then he went
away and hanged himself. 6 The chief priests
picked up the coins and said, "It is against the
law to put this into the treasury, since it is
blood money." 7 So they decided to use the
money to buy the potter's field as a burial place
for foreigners. 8 That is why it has been
called the Field of Blood to this day. 9 Then
what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was
fulfilled "They took the thirty silver coins,
the price set on him by the people of Israel,
10 and they used them to buy the potter's
field, as the Lord commanded me."
  •  DISCIPLES WOULD SCATTER
  • Zechariah 137 "Awake, O sword, against my
shepherd, against the man who is close to me!"
declares the LORD Almighty. "Strike the shepherd,
and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn
my hand against the little ones."  500 B.C.
  • Matthew 2631 Then Jesus told them, "This very
night you will all fall away on account of me,
for it is written " I will strike the shepherd,
and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.'"

45
Physically Wounded
  • BEATEN WITH A ROD Micah 51 Marshal your troops,
O city of troops, for a siege is laid against us.
They will strike Israel's ruler on the cheek with
    a rod.  700 B.C.
  • Mark 1519 Again and again they struck him on the
head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on
their knees, they paid homage to him.

46
GIVEN VINEGAR AND GALL TO DRINK
  • Psalm 6921 They put gall in my food and gave me
vinegar for my thirst.  1000 B.C.
  • Matthew 2734 There they offered Jesus wine to
drink, mixed with gall but after tasting it, he
    refused to drink it.
  • Matthew 2748  Immediately one of them ran and
got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put
it on a stick, and offered it to Jesus to drink.

47
HANDS AND FEET NAILED
  • Psalm 2216 Dogs have surrounded me a band of
evil men has encircled me, they have pierced my
hands and my feet.  1000 B.C.
  • John 2025 So the other disciples told him, "We
have seen the Lord!"  But he said to them,
"Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put
my finger where the nails were, and put my hand
into his side, I will not believe it."

48
CRUSHED FOR OUR INIQUITIES
  • Isaiah 535-6 5 But he was pierced for our
transgressions, he was crushed for our
iniquities the punishment that brought us peace
was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of
us has turned to his own way and the LORD has
laid on him the iniquity of us all.  700 B.C.
  • Romans 4 25  He was delivered over to death for
our sins and was raised to life for our
    justification.
  • 1 Corinthians 153 (NAB) I handed on to you
first of all what I myself received, that Christ
died for our sins in accordance with the
    ScripturesNABNew American Bible (not NASBNew
    American Standard Bible)

49
SUFFERED FOR THE SINS OF OTHERS
  • Psalm 694 Those who hate me without reason
outnumber the hairs of my head many are my
enemies without cause, those who seek to destroy
me. I am forced to restore what I did not steal.
     1000 B.C.
  • 1 Corinthians 153 (NAB) I handed on to you first
of all what I myself received, that Christ died
for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures

50
PIERCED FOR OUR TRANSGRESSIONS
  • Isaiah 535 But he was pierced for our
transgressions, he was crushed for our
iniquities the punishment that brought us peace
was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed.
     700 B.C.
  • Zechariah 1210 And I will pour out on the house
of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a
spirit of grace and supplication. They will look
on me, the one they have pierced, and they will
mourn for him as one mourns for an only child,
and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a
    firstborn son.  500 B.C.
  • John 1933-34 36-37  33 But when they came to
Jesus and found that he was already dead, they
did not break his legs.  34 Instead, one of the
soldiers pierced Jesus' side with a spear,
bringing a sudden flow of blood and water. 36
These things happened so that the scripture would
be fulfilled "Not one of his bones will be
broken," 37 and, as another scripture says,
"They will look on the one they have pierced."

51
NO BONES BROKEN
  • Psalm 2217 I can count all my bones people
stare and gloat over me.  1000 B.C.
  • Psalm 3420 he protects all his bones, not one of
them will be broken.  1000 B.C.
  • John 1933 36a 33 But when they came to Jesus
and found that he was already dead, they did not
break his legs. 36a These things happened so
that the scripture would be fulfilled "Not one
of his bones will be broken,"
  • It is important to realize that crucifixion
victims' legs normally were broken.  And yet, a
thousand years before the Crucifixion of Jesus,
King David foretold that the Messiah would die in
an unusual way.  See Forensic Pathology Report on
    Jesus.
  • SOLDIERS GAMBLE FOR HIS CLOTHES
  • Psalm 2218 They divide my garments among them
and cast lots for my clothing.  1000 B.C.
  • Matthew 2735 When they had crucified him, they
divided up his clothes by casting lots.
  • BRUTALLY KILLED Isaiah 538 By oppression and
judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of
his descendants? For he was cut off from the land
of the living for the transgression of my people
    he was stricken.  700 B.C.

52
ASSIGNED A GRAVE WITH THE WICKED
  • Isaiah 539 He was assigned a grave with the
wicked, and with the rich in his death  700 B.C.
  • Crucifixion was normally reserved for criminals
and people the Romans wanted to "make an example
of".  As a crucifixion victim, Jesus would have
been assigned a grave (if any) with such people.

53
BURIED IN A RICH MAN'S TOMB
  • Isaiah 539 He was assigned a grave with the
wicked, and with the rich in his death ...
     700 B.C.
  • Matthew 2757,59-60 57 As evening approached,
there came a rich man from Arimathea, named
Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of
Jesus. 59 Joseph took the body, wrapped it in a
clean linen cloth, 60 and placed it in his own
new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He
rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to
    the tomb and went away.

54
But arent you taking these out of context?
  • two sentences here, half a sentence there ..."
  • It is true that taking a few sentences here and
part of a sentence there would not prove
anything. But there are OVER FOUR HUNDRED AND
    TWENTY-FIVE references that are considered
Messianic prophesies.  Taken as a group it
becomes obvious they aren't just coincidences.
  • Also, some of the references, particularly Isaiah
11 and Isaiah 53 clearly are referring to the (at
    that time) coming Messiah.
  • Furthermore, in a number of instances, the New
Testament authors expressly state "This was to
    fulfill the prophecy 'ltwhatevergt'."

55
"Aren't these really mainly self-fulfilling
prophecies?"
  • Unless He was operating under the authority of
God, how could Jesus arrange to fulfill any of
    the following Messianic prophecies?
  • Born in Bethlehem
  • Be from Nazareth
  • Come out of Egypt (as a young child)
  • Descended from Judah
  • Descended from Jesse
  • Descended from David
  • No bones broken
  • Betrayed by a friend
  • Betrayed for exactly 30 pieces of silver
  • 30 pieces of silver returned
  • 30 pieces used to buy the potter's field
  • Born of a virgin
  • Perform miracles
  • R E S U R R E C T I O N ! ! !

56
  • So, sprinkled throughout all of HISTORY we see
    Jesus.
  • In Genisis 126 Let US make man in OUR image,
    in OUR likeness
  • In fact the very word for GOD is plural
  • Jesus is everywhere. He was there in the
    beginning

57
  • Genealogy
  • So one of these important predictions included a
family blood line linking back all the way to
king David. This is another amazing way God set
up the conditions so intricately that some joe
shmo couldnt come through and try to claim the
title Messiah. In fact, the blood line was so
detailed, theres record of it in two of the
    Gospels (Matt and Luke).

58
Bloodline of Jesus
59
The Line of Jesus through Joseph
  • The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the
son of David, the son of Abraham. Abraham was the
father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob,
and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers,
and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar,
and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the
father of Ram, and Ram the father of Amminadab,
and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon
the father of Salmon, and Salmon the father of
Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by
Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the
father of David the king. And David was the
father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, and
Solomon the father of Rehoboam, and Rehoboam the
father of Abijah, and Abijah the father of Asa,
and Asa the father of Jehoshaphat, and
Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, and Joram the
father of Uzziah, and Uzziah the father of
Jotham, and Jotham the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz
the father of Hezekiah, and Hezekiah the father
of Manasseh, and Manasseh the father of Amos, and
Amos the father of Josiah, and Josiah the father
of Jechoniah and his brothers, at the time of the
deportation to Babylon. And after the deportation
to Babylon Jechoniah was the father of
Shealtiel, and Shealtiel the father of
Zerubbabel, and Zerubbabel the father of Abiud,
and Abiud the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim the
father of Azor, and Azor the father of Zadok, and
Zadok the father of Achim, and Achim the father
of Eliud, and Eliud the father of Eleazar, and
Eleazar the father of Matthan, and Matthan the
father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Joseph
the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who
is called Christ. So all the generations from
Abraham to David were fourteen generations, and
from David to the deportation to Babylon fourteen
generations, and from the deportation to Babylon
to the Christ fourteen generations. (Matthew
    11-17)

Matthew's genealogy of Jesus
  • Matthew wrote to the Jews to present Jesus as
King of the Jews. The account is in Matthew
11-17.    It begins by showing Jesus was a
legal heir to the throne of David, by virtue of
his lineage. This fact is immediately set forth
in verse one, which states Jesus was the "son of
David, the son of Abraham." His kinship to David
the King of Israel is mentioned before that of
Abraham, the father of Israel.    Matthew's
genealogy traces the ancestors of Joseph, the
legal father of Jesus. Structure of Genealogy
Matthew's structure descends from father to son,
beginning with Abraham. Additionally, he divides
the genealogy into three groups of fourteen
    generations, separated by important historic
    points (Matthew 117).

Luke's Genealogy of Jesus
  • Luke's Audience The original readers of Luke's
works were Greek Christians. While Matthew wrote
to the Jews, Luke wrote to the Greeks.
       Matthew's genealogy emphasized Jesus' claim
to the throne of David. Since Luke's readers were
less concerned about the fulfillment of Jewish
prophecy, his genealogy focused on Jesus' descent
from God. It placed no emphasis on Jesus being
the descendant of King David. Reason for
    Differences Differences between the genealogies
of Matthew and Luke may be attributed to the fact
that Matthew traced the ancestry of Joseph, while
Luke traced the that of Mary. Unique Placement
of the Genealogy The placement of Luke's
genealogy is after the baptism of Christ. When
Jesus was baptized, God said "This is my beloved
son." Immediately following this event, as if to
prove God's declaration, Luke inserted the
    genealogy. Encouragement to Greek Christians
The genealogy culminated by showing Jesus was
the "son of Adam, the son of God" (Luke 328).
This emphasized the humanity of Jesus, and the
equality of all Christians, regardless of ethnic
    backgrounds.    Christians of Jewish descent
    originally considered Greek Christians as
inferior to themselves (Acts 151-31, Galatians
211-16). Luke's genealogy underscored the fact
that Jesus was the son of God. Since all men are
made in the image of God (Genesis 126-27), this
may have been a source of encouragement to the
    Greek Christians.

A Little About Joseph
  • Joseph in Christ's genealogy Matthew and Luke
showed that Joseph was a legal parent, but not a
genetic parent to Jesus. Jesus was miraculously
conceived in Mary, through the Holy Spirit. By
virtue of being Mary's husband, Joseph was
considered the father of Jesus. Since Jesus was
born into Joseph's family, he was a legal heir.
Through Joseph, Jesus obtained a rightful claim
to the throne of David.    Although Jesus was a
legal descendant to Joseph, he was not a physical
    descendant. Luke's genealogy directly addressed
this issue by stating Jesus was "supposedly the
son of Joseph" (Luke 323). Clearly, people had
assumed that Joseph was the biological father of
Jesus, when in fact he was not (Matthew 1355).
Who was Joseph's Father? At first glance,
Matthew and Luke appear to be in disagreement as
to who Joseph's father was. Matthew states he was
the son of Jacob, while Luke states he was the
son of Heli. Fortunately, an unlikely source has
aided scholars in unraveling this mystery.
The Jerusalem Talmud indicates that Mary was
the daughter of Heli (Haggigah, Book 77, 4).
Joseph was the son-in-law of Heli. Luke could
rightfully call Joseph the "son of Heli" because
this was in compliance with use of the word "son"
at that time. Moreover, designating a son-in-law
as a son had scriptural precedent. Refer to Son
in Jewish Genealogies for more on this topic.
Thus, Joseph was the son of Jacob, and the
    son-in-law of Heli.

The Curse of Jehoiakim
  • An unusual curse in Jeremiah 361-32 gives new
insight into the virgin birth of Jesus. The
CurseJehoiakim was a king of Israel. He angered
God by burning a scroll that Jeremiah the prophet
wrote. God cursed Jehoiakim by indicating that
none of his children would sit on the throne of
David (Jeremiah 3629-31). And although Jehoiakim
had children, scripture shows that none of them
ever reigned as King David had. The
ProblemJoseph, the father of Jesus, was one of
    Jehoiakim's descendants (through Jeconiah).
Joseph's offspring could not claim David's throne
because of the curse. Jesus laid claim to the
throne of David (Luke 132, Acts 230, Hebrews
122). If Jesus had been born of Joseph, the
curse would have been contradicted.    Also, God
had promised David that one of his physical
descendants would reign on the throne of his
kingdom forever (2 Samuel 712-13). As explained
above, Joseph was excluded from being the genetic
father of the future king of Israel.    It was
impossible to fulfill the requirements of both
curse and promise by natural means. One man had
to be both heir to and offspring of David,
without being the genetic descendant of
Jehoiakim. This problem required a divine
solution. The SolutionGod created a solution
through the miracle of the virgin birth. Although
Joseph was one of Jehoiakim's offspring (through
Solomon), Mary was not. She was a descendant of
Nathan, one of David's other sons (Luke 331).
God's promise to David was fulfilled because Mary
was the biological parent of Jesus.    The
virgin birth also addressed the curse God had
pronounced upon Jehoiakim. Kingship was an
inherited right. By Joseph, Jesus inherited a
legal claim to the throne of David. However, he
was exempt from the curse of Jehoiakim because
Joseph was not his genetic father.    So the
miracle of the virgin birth accomplished God's
will in two ways. First, it granted Jesus a legal
claim to the throne of David. And second, it
maintained the integrity of the curse God had
pronounced upon Jehoiakim. Indeed, Jesus was not
    one of Jehoiakim's offspring.

The Lineage Loophole By Phil Lunahttp//www.direc
t.ca/trinity/loophole.html
  • Mary should be disqualified to transfer the
rights of her lineage to her son Jesus, except
for a little known exception to the rule.
  • In Matthew 11-16 and Luke 323-38 we are
presented with two genealogies of Jesus Christ.
On the surface these different listings would
appear to be a contradiction in the scriptures.
The genealogy found in Matthew's gospel is the
lineage of Jesus' earthly father Joseph, while
the genealogy found in Luke's gospel is the
lineage of Jesus' mother Mary. However, many of
the people that teach on the genealogies fail to
realize or address a major problem associated
with the genealogical listing found in Luke's
gospel, the lineage of Mary. Once you have
established that the line is indeed Mary's you
must deal with a second difficulty. The rights of
the line are not passed through the mother, only
the father. Even though Mary, through her
lineage, was of the Davidic bloodline, she should
be excluded from being able to pass those rights
of the bloodline because of being a female (Deut
2116). So it is not enough to prove that Mary
was an unblemished descendant of David, she had
to be a male to transfer the rights. Therefore
she would be disqualified to transfer the rights
to her son Jesus, except for a little known
    exception to the rule.
  • In Numbers 26 we are introduced to Zelophehad.
Zelophehad, we are told, had no sons, only
daughters. In Numbers 27, following the death of
Zelophehad, the daughters of Zelophehad came
before Moses and argued their plight. Because
their father had died with no sons, all of their
rights of inheritance were to be lost and they
felt this was unfair. So Moses prayed to God and
God gave Moses an exception to the rule. The Lord
told Moses that the inheritance CAN flow through
a female, IF they fulfill two requirements. There
must be no male offspring in the family (Num
    278) and if the female offspring should marry,
they must marry within their own tribe (Num
    366).
  • Now we come back to Mary. On the surface she
should be unable to transfer the rights to her
Son. But when you research you find that Mary had
NO brothers, AND Mary did indeed marry within her
    own tribe to Joseph.
  • What an awesome God we serve that set in order
the requirements to allow the virgin birth to
take place 1,400 years in advance! Did Mary have
    any brothers?

  • The following by Guy Cramer
  • After reading the detailed information above, I
asked Phil if he knew of any information on
Mary's brothers. He cited numerous non-canonical
works such as The Catholic Encyclopedia, the
apocryphal book called, the Protoevangelium of
James... tradition states that Mary had no
    brothers.
  • Curious, I went through the four gospels looking
for any reference to collaborate Phil's
    references.
  • In John 1925-27 we read Now there stood by the
cross of Jesus His Mother, and His mother's
sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary
Magdalene. When Jesus therefore saw His Mother,
and the disciple whom he loved standing by, He
said to His mother, "Woman, behold your son!"
Then He said to the disciple
