SKS Swaminarayan Shikshapatri Slok 15
One shall not eat meat, even in a moment of
extreme necessity, even if it is the remains of a
sacrifice nor shall they ever drink alcoholic
drinks even if it has been offered to a deity.

SLOK 15
  • In this slok, Lord Shree Swaminarayan states that
His followers should not eat any kind of meat.
Whether it is an offering from a Yagna or an
offering to a deity. We the followers are all
forbidden to touch meat because it is considered
to be the most unholy, as it is obtained from
    carcasses (dead animals).
  • These are the few disadvantages of eating meat
  • Eating meat makes the person guilty of killing
    the animal.
  • It is also selfish to kill another living being
in order to satisfy ones appetite.
  • We are not allowed to any food that has directly
or indirectly come into contact with meat of any
    kind.
  • Eating meat also causes one to be sick and
    eventually die.

It is said in the Manusmruti (holy scriptures)
that the person who encourages to kill, the one
who prepares to kill, the one who actually kills,
the one who cooks the meat, the one who
distributes and sells the meat and lastly the one
who eats the meat are all equal sinners. Those
who lead sinful lives by eating meat end up in
hell, even if they perform endless Yajnas.
However, those who live innocence live better
life even if they do not perform any Yajnas. One
should also not eat food from restaurants because
the same utensils are used for preparing both
vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. Even if they
use separate utensils, there is still a high
possibility of non-vegetarian food touching
vegetarian food. Eating such food is equally
sinful.

SLOK 15
  • In the second part of the slok, Lord Shree
Swaminarayan forbids His followers to drink
    liquor and wine.
  • This is because liquor and wine are intoxicants
    and they affect the brain.
  • The effect of alcohol can be seen today with the
    rise of alcohol related deaths.
  • Also alcohol has been recognised as the main
    contributor to liver cancer.
  • Alcohol makes the mind lose control of the body,
resulting in many other sins e.g. gambling and
    adultery.
  • Alcohol is also addictive. Drinking too much
alcohol frequently could make you dependent on it
and also make you sick if you do not have any.

The soft drinks dont affect the brain
immediately, but does it gradually. However, in
the present days, many more types of alcohol are
made from various types of fruits and cereals are
available. These should all be avoided. It is
said in the Manusmruti that if one touches liquor
or wine, then he/she has to get his/her Sanskar
again. If one drinks one mouthful unknowingly and
then spits it out, then he/she has to vomit out
everything and then fast for 3 days and drink
Panchamrit. Only then he/she is purified.
