  • Loc8 is a geographic information system
(GIS). This is a system for capturing, storing,
analysing and managing data and associated
attributes which are spatially referenced to the
earth. In the strictest sense, it is a computer
system capable of integrating, storing, editing,
    analysing, sharing, and displaying
    geographically-referenced information. In a more
generic sense, GIS is a tool that allows users to
    create interactive queries (user created
searches), analyse the spatial information, edit
data, maps, and present the results of all these
operations. Loc8 has been created by the Regional
Broadband Consortium, YHGfL for educational use
in the region's school and is free of charge.

Use the magnifying glass to zoom into school area
5
Use the magnifying glass to zoom into school area
6
Use text tool to label familiar landmarks
7
Use layers to add aerial photographs
8
Use the magnifying glass to zoom into school area
9
Use the OS Raster maps to look at streets and
houses
10
Use the pen tool to map out Billys journey to
school. This gives a distance in metres and then
alternative routes could be explored.
11
Use the pen tool to measure the area and
perimeter of a school field. Then enter another
school postcode, measure the field and compare
the two.

13
Use layers (land use and aerial) and opacity tool
to demonstrate land use.
14
Seaside resorts
Using Loc8 in literacy. Find a destination,
double click to bring up the gazetteer tool.
15
Here we are looking at Pleasure Island. By double
clicking on a destination you can bring up
gazetteer which allows you to view and upload
user data.
16
Adding user information
17
Images, text, and files (Powerpoint, Word, Video
clips etc.) can be added to the Loc8 gazetteer.
18
Once user data has been entered into the
gazetteer the location can be identified on the
map by a red blob so information can be easily
retrieved.

  • Other Ideas for using Loc8
  • Current issues e.g. flooding using landline
plus map to look at the position of rivers in
relation to houses and using this to predict
which areas are most likely to flood and why.
  • Grid references how they can be used to locate
an area (nb these are in 6 figures and this makes
    things a bit complicated!)
  • Settlements using the landline plus
  • Rivers, mountains and coasts can use height and
    terrain option under layers
  • History of an area which can be linked to
    literacy
  • ICT presentation
  • And loads more!!!

20
  • Next steps
  • Cascading the use of the software in schools
  • Further development of the software
  • Training and technical support
