    well-being in later life?

What is mental health?
  • There is no health without mental health
  • A state of well-being in which the individual
    realises his or her own abilities, can cope with
    the normal stresses of life and is able to
    contribute to his or her own community
  • Is it the same as happiness?

Mental health problems in later life
  • Depression is the most common affects 12-15 of
    older people living in the community, 40-60 in
    residential care
  • Suicide rates are highest among 75
  • Dementia probably gets the most attention
  • Alcohol and substance misuse overlooked
  • Many more people growing older with severe and
    enduring problems

Risk factors for depression
  • Loss and bereavement or fear of loss
  • Physical illness, pain and disability
  • Social isolation
  • Daily hassles
  • Interpersonal conflict
  • Being poor, female, having a sensory impairment
  • Lack of appropriate services and support

Well-Being in Later Life
  • First of two reports that will be published by
    the Inquiry
  • Published June 2006
  • Based on older peoples views and experiences
  • Identified 5 key factors and made 15
    recommendations

Relationships
  • The main thing is love. Food, shelter and
    warmth are important but its lack of someone
    caring that leads to despair.
  • - Ms A, retired charity worker, aged 71
  • Older people said that friends, family, pets and
    a sense of community are all important
  • Relationships closely linked to the other factors

Health Effects of Neighbour Disputes
  • Fife Community Mediation study (1999)
  • Three quarters of participants felt their health
    had been negatively affected
  • 95 of people showed stress related symptoms
  • Two thirds showed increased aggression
  • Average level of medication use rose fourfold
