Agenda
  • The New Enterprise
  • Adding Mobility to Fixed Wireless Broadband
  • End-user expectations
  • Carrier expectations
  • Key challenges
  • Wi-Fi and WiMAX scenarios
  • Colubris and Redline collaboration
  • Summary

3
The New Enterprise
  • Strong momentum to complete conversion to all-IP
    networks
  • Wi-Fi is more and more seen as an INTEGRAL part
    of the Corporate LAN Backbone
  • Security and QoS are now mature enough
  • Management solutions are adequate
  • Ready for UNIFICATION of the wired and wireless
    worlds
  • Looking to Wi-Fi to add MOBILITY dimension
  • Looking to Wi-Fi to hide specifics of Broadband
    Access Network

4
The New Enterprise
  • Adding MOBILITY with Wi-Fi facilitates seamless
    access to the information
  • Voice is information as much as data
  • Helps increase productivity reduce staff stress
  • Access to data is still possible, even away from
    desk
  • Looking for a single wireless infrastructure for
    both voice and data
  • Micro-BTS and GSM-repeaters dont offer adequate
    data performances
  • Multitude purpose-built wireless devices become
    available

5
Unifying the wired and wireless worlds
  • Unification of the wired and wireless worlds
    means
  • Single set of user credentials
  • Single set of security policies
  • Single user profile QoS, VLAN, Bandwidth limits
  • Overall, much better User Experience
  • But what about the IT Staff
  • Re-use of 100 of the wired infrastructure
capabilities for Security, QoS and Management
  • No need to manage parallel solutions
  • Extensible and Scalable architecture, future-proof

WiFi and WIMAX Convergence
  • Due to the proliferation of WIFI in end user
devices it is the smart choice to add a mobility
dimension to the fixed wireless broadband service
    offered by WiMAX
  • Seamless mobility across Layers 2 and 3
  • End-to-end QOS
  • Strong integration with existing OSS/BSS and
various Core IP networks is easily achievable
  • WIMAX is ideal for backhaul or business access
where other broadband technologies are not
    available or cost effective

12
There is an immediate need for mobility!
  • Mobility is key to the unification of service
    delivery across various disparate backhaul
    technologies
  • Services such as Voice are expected to be
available from any locations, at all times
  • Other data services can also benefit from
    mobility, such as transportation, shipping
    yards, etc.
  • Enables continuous service availability from a
    single device
  • Same device shall be usable across various
    Broadband Access networks

13
End-user expectations
  • Seamless service availability from a single
device, independent of the Broadband Access
    Network
  • For voice, this means a single device, phone
    number and voice mailbox
  • Use Cellular as extension when no Fixed Broadband
    coverage
  • Ease of use
  • Use currently available devices, this means
    Wi-Fi!
  • Battery life shall be comparable to a cellular
    device
  • Familiar user experience
  • Service shall provide a consistent look and feel
with a single set of credentials and no need to
login again as long as user remains within
    coverage

14
Carrier / Operator Expectations
  • Service offering flexibility
  • Solution deployed needs to fit into existing
service framework and facilitate new services
    with a Mobility Dimension
  • Business model flexibility
  • Underlying service delivery infrastructure shall
fit into current business models and facilitate
the introduction of new models with strong focus
    on Mobile and Managed Services
  • ROI considerations
  • Cost of deployment/update of core infrastructure
  • Cost of deployment of wireless coverage
  • Ability to leverage existing OSS and BSS
    infrastructure

15
Key Challenges
  • RF Planning and Provisioning
  • Avoid dreaded truck rolls whenever possible
  • Solution and network management
  • All interlocking pieces need to be unified under
    a single management umbrella
  • QOS
  • End to end, predictable Quality of Service
  • Security
  • Using Wireless shall not reduce risks and
    exposure
  • Seamless service offering across various IP
subnets and even distinct access networks
  • What about DSL, DOCSIS, Metro Ethernet?

16
Adding Mobility to WiMAX NOW!
  • Wi-Fi is the perfect end-user wireless technology
to add seamless mobility to Fixed Broadband
    Wireless
  • Across a WiMAX backhaul
  • Between WiMAX end-points (Subscriber Stations)
and even across WiMAX Base Stations
  • Colubris InMotion MSC and InReach MAP provide
  • Seamless mobility
  • Session and service continuity
  • Focuses on the Control Plane to free up the Fast
    Data Path

Focus of collaboration
  • Immediate availability
  • Solution is based on current product offerings
  • Licensed and unlicensed band support
  • Flexible solution based on country specific radio
    regulations
  • Turn Fixed Broadband Wireless into
  • Multi-Service end-to-end QOS and Security
  • Mobile seamless handover for Wi-Fi, WiMAX and
    even Cellular
  • Managed service offering comprehensive RF
    planning, provisioning and manageability

19
Proposed Phased Approach
  • Phase 1
  • launch of joint solution for Mobility across
    Fixed Broadband Wireless backhaul
  • Phase 2
  • Improve Management Integration to facilitate
    deployment, provisioning and manageability
  • Beyond Phase 2
  • Further integration to enhance interface to OSS
and BSS with focus on ease of creation and
    deployment of new services
