8What are FL requirements?
- If devising an individual route to meet FL, x2
Key Requirements need to demonstrate additional
learning against QAA Level Statements - 1) Deepening of knowledge in Engineering and
Scientific topics to appropriate level - 2) Broadening of knowledge through a
combination of general and specialist
engineering knowledge application of appropriate
theoretical and practical methods to analyse and
solve engineering problems and/or, knowledge in
technical and commercial leadership
9What is Further Learning?
- evidence of knowledge and understanding, beyond
initial qualification - route to meet full exemplifying academic
benchmark level - emphasis on new learning - the underpinning
knowledge of IPD
10FL How to go about it?
- Consider combinations of work based learning and
academic study - selecting minimum 2 Engineering/science based,
Masters Level modules (for CEng) - Highlight and describe combination of technical
and non technical work based learning - Submit an Individual FL plan to IMechE for
approval before you embark on a course
11Assessment Evidence
- Formal written assessment against defined
assessment criteria - Presentation/Report plus Viva Voce
- Keep reports and records as evidence
- ensure assessment has been carried out
- send evidence of completion to IMechE
- only when the entire plan is completed
- send in assessment sheets to IMechE
- ensure you keep copies of all reports/assessments
12Who assesses the learning?
- Assessment can be conducted by
- senior persons in the company, such as technical
specialists - high level managers working in non-technical
areas of the business - Mentors, visiting industrial lecturers etc
- The final plan must be authenticated and signed
off by a - CEng/IEng registered Mentor
13How can Companies help?
- Develop a Company FL Plan
- identify Universities to deliver Masters modules
- select modules that will add real value to the
company - identify other courses, seminars, conferences
- identify work-based projects and provide access
to the wider business, for individuals to write
about learning - make sure that individuals are registered on your
company plan and confirm this in writing with the
IMechE so it can be recorded - Submit the Company FL Plan
- this can be approved for up to 5 years
