Title: The Colour Wheel

1
The Colour Wheel
2
  • The Primary colours are blue, red, and yellow
Secondary colours are orange, purple and green
and are made by mixing two primary colours from
either side of the colour wheel.Intermediary
colours are made by mixing a primary and a
secondary colour together. Like purple and blue,
green and yellow or blue and green.

3
  • Tertiary colours are the result of mixing two
secondary Colours. For example, mixing orange and
    purple.
  • Analogous colours on the colour wheel are right
next to each other and have a colour in common.
Like blue, blue/green, and green all contain
blue. Red, orange and yellow are analogous
because red and yellow make orange

4
  • Complementary colours are opposite from each
other on the colour wheel and they contrast
because they do not have any colours in common.
Green is made by mixing yellow and blue, so it
    will complement red

5
If we want vibrant colours, we have to be careful
what colours we use. For example, say we want a
purple. Suppose we use a red-orange and a blue
green. We get red blue purple plus
(primaries) (secondary) plus orange plus
green neutral (grey/brown)
secondaries tertiary which means we get a very
dull purple. We should use pure red and pure blue
to get a vibrant purple
6
  • Complementary colours stand out
  • Analogous colours harmonise
  • Tertiary plus a secondary give neutrals which
    dull colours
