1
The Planets in our Solar System
  • Prepared by Kerry Schofield
  • A Science Lesson for Third Grade
  • On the Planets

2
Our Solar System
  • How many planets are in our solar system?
  • There are nine planets in our solar system.

3
What will you learn?
  • You will be learning some facts about each of the
    planets in our solar system.
  • They will be presented starting with the planet
closest to the sun, Mercury and ending with the
planet farthest from the sun, Pluto.
  • There will be a short quiz at the end.

4
Mercury
  • The average temperature of Mercury is 800 degrees
Fahrenheit during the day and -300 degrees
    Fahrenheit and night.
  • Its terrain is heavily cratered with smooth
    plains in between.

5
Venus
  • Venus is about the same size as the earth.
  • It has 225 days in a year.
  • Its atmosphere is very thick with carbon dioxide.
  • It has a wide variety of surface structure due to
    volcanic eruptions.

6
Earth
  • The length of the year is 365.26 days.
  • The average temperature is 59 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • The environment can be divided into four realms
    the magnetosphere, the lithosphere, the
    atmosphere and the hydrosphere.

7
Mars
  • It has 687 days in a year.
  • Mars has seasons similar to Earth, but much
colder. During a mid-summer day, the temperature
    rarely climbs above freezing.
  • The terrain consists of volcanoes, canyons,
    plains, and craters.

8
Jupiter
  • Jupiter has many moons surrounding it.
  • A year consists of 11.86 Earth years.
  • It emits more radio noise than any other object
in the solar system except the sun.
  • It has an enormous magnet field that is a million
times the volume of Earths magnetosphere.

9
Saturn
  • Saturns year is the length of 29.46 Earth years.
  • It has many rings that surround it with gaps in
    between.
  • The upper atmosphere is composed mainly of
    hydrogen and helium.

10
Uranus
  • A year in Uranus is 84.01 Earth years long.
  • Its atmosphere consists of methane gas.
  • Uranus also has rings surrounding it. There have
    been eleven identified.

11
Neptune
  • Because of its long distance from the Sun, the
atmosphere in Neptune is an average of -373
    degrees Fahrenheit.
  • The blue-green color of the planet is due to the
presence of methane gas in the atmosphere. Its
atmosphere also contains hydrogen and helium.
  • The length of one year equals 165 years on Earth.

12
Pluto
  • Pluto is the smallest planet.
  • It is also the farthest from the Sun, having an
average temperature of -390 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • It has an unusual orbit that sometimes takes it
closer to the Sun than Neptune.
