Title: Measurement!

1
Measurement!
2
Remember the definition of Chemistry
  • Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes
    that it undergoes.
  • A change in matter a change in its energy
  • So we measure matter and we also measure energy

3
Metric System!
  • The scientific system of measurement that makes
math easier than does the English system because
its based on multiplying and dividing by 10
    (within a certain quantity).
  • Its also better because the French thought of it
    first.

4
The Metric System Base Units
Quantity Unit Unit symbol
Length meter m
Mass gram g
Time second s
Amount mole mol
Electric current ampere A
Luminous intensity candela cd

7
Two for Volume
  • Beaker
  • Graduated Cylinder

Basic unit for volume is the liter, but
beakers and graduated cylinders give you volume
in milliliters (mL). 1000 mL 1 L
8
Time
  • A chronometer, ok a clock, gives you time in
    seconds (s).

9
Temperature
  • A thermometer gives you temperature in
    degrees Celsius (C).

10
Mass
  • A triple beam balance gives you mass in grams (g).

11
Length
  • A ruler will give you distance in centimeters
    (cm) and millimeters (mm).
  • 100 cm 1 meter
  • 1000 mm 1 meter
