3DEFINITION OF STROKE
- A stroke is the sudden death of brain cells
due to a problem with the blood supply. When
blood flow to the brain is impaired, oxygen and
important nutrients cannot be delivered. The
result is abnormal brain function. Blood flow to
the brain can be disrupted by either a blockage
or rupture of an artery to the brain. A stroke is
also referred to as a cerebrovascular accident or
CVA.
4Types of stroke
Ischemic
Haemorrhagic
5Causes of Ischemic stroke
- Arteries to the brain are blocked
- due to atherosclerotic deposits on the
artery wall. - Embolus (a fragment of material from another
part of the body) - when the embolus loose, travels in the
blood stream to the arteries supplying the brain
and blocks off an artery.
6Causes of Haemorrhagic stroke
Occurs when thinned out of abnormal blood vessels
in the brain burst.
The blood then moves out of the blood vessel to
exert pressure on the affected part of the brain
and its surrounding.
7High blood pressure
diabetes
obesity
Risk factors of getting stroke.
Raised blood cholesterol
smoking
Excessive alcohol consumption
Lack of exercise
