Title: Local Modeling at NOAANWS Marquette Incorporating TAMDAR Data

1
Local Modeling at NOAA/NWS Marquette
Incorporating TAMDAR Data
  • 11 April 2005
  • GLFE Meeting
  • Tom Hultquist
  • Science Operations Officer
  • NOAAs National Weather Service, Marquette, MI
  • thomas.hultquist_at_noaa.gov
  • 906-475-5782 x766

2
Model Configuration
  • Local Analysis Prediction System (LAPS version
0-24-3) used for hourly data assimilation/analyses
  • LAPS cycles each hour with the WRF-ARW (version
2.0.3.1), providing WRF with its initial
conditions and using the WRF forecast as its
    (LAPS) first guess
  • LAPS is ingesting a combination of MADIS and
AWIPS data comprising all basic data (METAR,
    maritime, mesonet, RAOBs, profiler, satellite
    imager, aircraft w/TAMDAR, etc)
  • LAPS is not currently running in diabatic hot
start mode due to technical problems, but a
solution to this problem is being sought

3
Model Configuration
  • LAPS utilizing 22 vertical levels with 15km grid
    spacing
  • WRF-ARW utilizing 31 vertical levels with
identical grid spacing (15 km) and domain
  • Model top at 50 mb
  • Kain-Fritsch (new) cumulus scheme
  • Lin et al. 5 class microphysics scheme
  • RRTM longwave radiation scheme
  • Goddard shortwave radiation scheme
  • Noah land surface model
  • YSU PBL scheme

Access to Model Output
  • Model output is available via the web
  • Internally (within NWS), the output is available
    at
  • http//wseta.mqt.noaa.gov/SOO/wrf_html/wrf.php
  • The output is available to anyone at
  • http//www.crh.noaa.gov/mqt/data/wrf_html/wrf.php
  • Display of static images and loops (one hour
    temporal resolution) is available
  • Basic diagnostic fields are available as well as
    a few aviation parameters
  • Soundings are available for a number of locations
in Wisconsin and Upper Michigan (if you would
like a sounding generated for another site,
    contact thomas.hultquist_at_noaa.gov)

6
Access to Model Output (web-based interface)
7
Quick Forecast Comparison
9-hour LAPS/WRF-ARW Forecast Valid for KGRB at 12
UTC 12 April 2005
KGRB RAOB Valid at 12 UTC 12 April 2005

Archive Efforts
  • A 14 day running archive is maintained for raw
data files and web-based model output
  • Data is permanently archived for cases of
    interest
  • Thus far, two cases have been archived (a lake
effect snow event and a heavy rain event)
  • Forecasters (and other SOOs) are encouraged to
    contact thomas.hultquist_at_noaa.gov with
interesting cases so that they can be permanently
    archived for later study
  • Model simulations with/without TAMDAR data will
be conducted on archived cases of interest
  • Information on the project and results from a few
case studies will likely be presented at the
    U.S./Canada Great Lakes Operational Meteorology
Workshop scheduled to take place in Grand Rapids,
    Michigan, September 14-16, 2005.
