Happened so far
  • National Library has recommended the use of URNs
and has been using them herself
  • Library has distributed URN identifiers from a
    generator on the web (http//www.lib.helsinki.fi/c
    gi-bin/urn.pl)
  • But then what?
  • No information of who gave URNs to which
    documents
  • No support from web browsers (yet)

3
National URN resolver
  • Resolver receives a URN and redirects to a URL.
  • A national resolver contains information about
    URNs with the code fi
  • Resolvers may also direct to other resolvers
    based on namespaces
  • e.g. URNs with se to urn.kb.se in Sweden.
  • Subset namespaces may have resolvers of their own
  • e.g. urnnbnfitkk... is redirected to Helsinki
    University of Technology.

4
Resolving ISBN and ISSN based URNs
  • The ISSN has no internal meaningful elements to
identify language, country, publisher, or medium.
  • ISSN 1456-2979 who should resolve this?
  • Global resolution system would be needed
  • Otherwise, the right resolver must be indicated
  • The ISBN is, to some extent, meaningful
  • Finnish National Centre for ISBN allots ISBNs
    starting with 951- or 952-.
  • But sometimes more complicated!

5
Feeding Resolver with Data
  • Publisher keeps an up-to-date list of URNURL
    pairs.
  • A long-term responsibility!
  • Publisher may obtain a namespace of its own to
facilitate URN delivery (e.g., if using an
    internal URN generator)
  • Responsibility for uniqueness!
  • Data expressed as a XML-file.
  • Resolver harvests data from the file on a regular
    basis.

6
URN and DSpace
  • We want URN support into DSpace
  • URN generation integrated into the submission
    process
  • Clickable URNs in the user interface
  • Easy updates to the resolver
  • Work is under way in Universitätsbibliothek
    Kassel
  • Might be ready in January, 2007!
  • Data harvested directly from DSpace using
    OAI-PMH.
