Title: The problems and what the government can do to solve them
1Brazilian Problems with the Amazon
- The problems and what the government can do to
solve them
2Some of the many things that Brazil is doing to
their Rainforest
- Cattle and ranching
- poor quality of the rain forest
- Logging of the Amazon
- Hydro-electric dams
3The Amazon
- The Amazon should look like these pictures but
because of logging, cattle ranching,
hydro-electric dams and numerous other ways of
destruction.
4What the Amazon Looks like now
- This is what happens when ranchers need more land
or farmers need more land. This is really not
fair to the environment and the rest of the world.
5Ranching
- Brazilian ranching accounts for 80 of forest
destruction. Ranchers burn huge amounts of forest
so that their cows can graze on ferns and other
plants that grow there
6- The massive amounts of ranching are one of the
HUGE problems of the forest. You would think that
the forestry company does even more clearing than
ranching, but it is not so. As mentioned earlier,
ranching takes out 80 of the clearing. When the
ranchers started moving into the interior, the
government actually encouraged it, and sold the
land for about 25 cents per hectare.
7Rain Forest Land Quality...to be bluntsucks...
- Another one of the major problems of Brazil and
the forest, is this. The farmers need land. They
clear some rain forest land. They find out it is
not very fertile, and needs intense fertilizing
after the first few years. So, after it is
practically rendered useless, the go out and
clear some more land. And then the whole cycle
starts again.
8Loggingand other various destruction of trees
- Logging is once again another one of the major
problems of destruction in the rain forest.
Before the highways were built, this placed was
not accessible for logging because river access
to the sawmills was not possible.
9Hydro-electricitycostlier than it needs to be?
- Damming the rivers of the rain forest is another
problemsure they provide electricity for the
places of Brazil, but is it really worth the
thousands of hectares worth of damage and
destruction to the rain forest?
10Problems do have Solutionsright?!?
- All problems have to have solutions, or else our
world would be an even bigger problem than it
already is. In the next few slides, there are
going to be suggestions as to how these problems
can be either reduced, or eliminated.
11Ranching
- For the ranching business, why continue to
destroy the rain forest? Why not move in to the
interior plains. The soil is better there, and
there are more plains then there are rainforest,
and also, the rainforest provides the world with
a lot of its oxygen.
12Farming And The Bad Land Quality
- Once again, the land of the rain forest is not
good for these people, and they needlessly
destroy it because the soil depletes to fast.
These farmers could do the same as the ranchers,
move to the interior, and use the more fertile
land there.
13Logging, Cut Down On The Problem
- Why do they need to do so much clear cutting? All
they need to do instead of chopping down
everything, and then choosing what they want.
When instead, you could prune the trees you
already have for firewood, and have more left
over. You can also do select cutting in the
forest. Cut down only the trees you need, and not
everything.
14Hydro-Electric Power Dousing Spirits
- A multi-use idea for solving this wet problem, is
to make a large artificial lake in the interior
plainsnot only could this lake be used for
electricity, but it could then also be used as an
irrigation source for the semi-arid areas.
15And there you have it folks...
- Yes, Brazil is having problems, yes they can be
solved. Yes, we can help no really, I'm serious,
you can. I dont know how, but you can.
16It SHOULD be like this...
