Aim of the Service
  • Develop an evidence base for alcohol
    interventions within criminal justice settings
    which reduces offending and improves health
    well being

What we know about Brief Interventions
  • Treatment vs. advice little difference between
    the 2 after 12 months
  • Numerous studies which all favour the
    effectiveness of BI in reducing alcohol to low
    risk levels in hazardous and harmful drinkers.
  • The effect of brief intervention is estimated to
    be a 24 reduction in alcohol consumption

What we do
  • Brief Interventions
  • Operated within designated Custody suites and the
    community
  • Routes Conditional Caution, Conditional Bail,
    Voluntary
  • Two Sessions
  • Advice given on safe drinking and the links
    between unsafe drinking and offending
  • Partnership working with Addaction

What have we learnt?
  • Good working relationship with Custody Suites is
    crucial
  • Dedicated Alcohol Team is more beneficial
  • Offering true BIs in the custody suite is more
    effective in cost and resource
  • There is a desperate need for more services
    within CJS and the community (we dont have
    enough)
  • Agency networking is vital
  • Family support is more likely
  • Clients are more inclined to accept counselling

What have we learnt?
  • Clients are more inclined to accept group work
  • It is virtually normal to use cocaine with
    alcohol on a night out
  • Clients are less likely to reoffend 6 months post
    treatment
  • Agency networking is vital
  • Police staff work better if they have a working
    knowledge of the service
  • Of the Poly use clients we have Alcohol is
    always the main issue

What have we learnt?
  • We must be able to offer further interventions
    for dependent drinkers of which there is a
    distinct lack
  • Offences appear to be more serious more violent
    and of a sexual nature
  • Alcohol is a powerful Addiction that is still
    Taboo
  • Binge drinkers can score high on Audit (30)
  • People are still worried about the stigma
  • Growth potential for the service is huge

  • We believe we are having an impact
