2Are you now or have you ever been, a member of
the communist party?"
3"McCarthyism is Americanism with its sleeves
rolled."
4The mad march of Red fascism is a cause for
concern ... But the deceit, the trickery, and the
lies of the American Communists are catching up
with them.
5I have here in my hand a list of 205 people that
were known to the Secretary of State as being
members of the Communist Party and who
nevertheless are still working and shaping the
policy of the State Department.
6The American people are sick and tired of being
afraid to speak their minds lest they be
politically smeared as Communists or Fascists by
their opponents. Freedom of speech is not what it
used to be in America.
7The reason why we find ourselves in a position
of impotency is not because our only powerful
potential enemy has sent men to invade our
shores, but rather because of the traitorous
actions of those who have been treated so well by
this Nation.
8The thing that I resent the most is that they
are able to get into these unions, take them
over, and represent to the world that people that
are in my plant, that I know are good, 100
Americans, are trapped by this group, and they
are represented to the world as supporting all
those ideologies.
9The most stringent protection of free speech
would not protect a man falsely shouting fire in
a theater and causing a panic.
10The American people know there have been
Communists in our government from the records of
convictions and confessions. They know there are
in it liberals who do the work of Communists.
11We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty.
12In Germany they first came for the Communists,
and I didnt speak up because I wasnt a
Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I
didnt speak up because I wasnt a Jew. Then they
came for the trade unionists, and I didnt speak
up because I wasnt a trade unionist. Then they
came for the Catholics, and I didnt speak up
because I was a Protestant. Then they came for
me-and by that time no one was left to speak up.
13I do not think we need fear too much about the
Communists dropping atomic bombs on Washington.
They would kill too many of their friends that
way.
14At long last have you left no sense of decency?
