Planning and Drafting

• First assemble the elements of your argument
• Use the notes you took and organize them in a
  logical order
• Then begin composing your sentences
• Either quickly write a large section or
• Write sentence by sentence

• Organizing the body of the report
• Typical order may be
• Introduction
• Methods and Materials (varies
• with type of research)
• Results
• Discussion
• Conclusion

• Contemplate where to state your main Point or
  Claim
• Introduction near the end (lets them know where
  you are heading and what they need to anticipate)
• Conclusion (but still give them a sense of the
  direction you are going in the introduction)
• Remember that you can always go back and put it
  in a different place

• Plan a working intro
• Give a brief context of the paper
• State your question and its importance
• Give a brief answer or solution

BODY

• Provide BRIEF background material and other
  pertinent information necessary to understand the
  concept or topic
• Provide reasons for your claim
• Provide evidence for your reasons
• Provide acknowledgements and responses
• Provide warrants (if necessary)

Conclusion

• Bring it all together
• Give the significance of your research (again)

• TRAPS TO AVOID
• 1. Dont organize your report around your
  assignment
• 2. Dont just summarize sources one right after
  another. Include your own thoughts throughout
  the paper.
• 3. Dont structure your report around the topics
  of your data, but rather around your analysis and
  claim(s)
• 4. Dont structure your report around a story of
  your research

PLAGIARISM AND ACADEMIC INTEGRITY

• Definition using someone elses words as your
  own
• Use quotation marks around exact copying
• Footnote or endnote all quotations AND concepts
  or ideas taken from other sources
• Dont paraphrase too closely
• DONT DO IT, and DO THE RIGHT THING!
