The History of Farol da Barra
  • In 1698, the 1st bronze and steel Lighthouse was
installed on the Fort of Santo Antonio, in
Salvador, Bahia. D. João de Lencastro built this
fort two years before, and formerly it was
powered by whale oil. The lighthouse is located
on a cement tower on top of the Santo Antônio
fort, situated 124 feet above sea level. The
tower of Farol da Barra was incorporated in 1796,
and last modified in 1899, modification that gave
    the lighthouse its actual appearance.
  • With a maximum reach of 18 miles in a good
weather, the lighthouse has a function of
orienting the coast, to protect arriving boats.
In 1888 a new European light system was bought,
and inaugurated in 1890. Its light flashes one
white and one red flash each ten seconds. In 1937
the lighthouse received an electric powered light
system, and in 1956 a new system of rotation.
Farol da Barras third light system was produced
in England ad installed on D. Pedro IIs
    birthday, 2/12/1839. Todays lighthouse was
installed in 1890, having an actual length of 22
meters and height of 39 meters above sea level.
Its light reaches up to 38 miles.
