Title: To open Photoshop, click Start, All Programs, Adobe Photoshop CS

1
To open
Photoshop, click Start, All Programs, Adobe
Photoshop CS
2
After
opening Photoshop, a screen such as this will
appear, click close
3
To open a
picture for resizing, click File, and scroll down
to Open
4
After completing step 3, a screen such as this
will appear. Simply find the folder the picture
is stored in, click on the picture,
and then click open.
5
The picture is now ready to be resized. Most
pictures received from the department include
dates, which need to be deleted to make the
website look more professional.
6
To delete the date, we will simply crop it out.
Cropping means to cut off a certain area of the
picture. To crop the picture, select the
rectangular marquee tool from the tool box in the
upper left hand corner of the screen.
7
After selecting the rectangular marquee tool,
choose an area to crop. Be sure to include the
main portion of the picture that you would like
to be seen on the Internet inside the dotted
lines. Everything outside of the dotted lines
will be deleted from the picture. To crop, one
click and hold down the right mouse button in one
of the corners of your new picture two
continue to hold down the mouse as you drag the
rectangular marquee across the picture to the
other new corner three release the right
mouse button to leave a box of dotted lines
around what will soon become your new picture.
If at any time you mess up, simply hit controlz
to back up.
8
After you have the dotted box around your
picture, go back to the top of the screen and
choose Image, and then scroll down and click crop
9

After you crop your picture, it should look
something like this.
10
After the date is cropped out, the picture needs
to be resized to fit on the webpage. Pictures for
the newsletter should be resized to 160x200. In
other words, the picture should be 160 pixels
wide by 200 pixels high. All pictures for the
news heads at the top of the homepage should be
52x52. All other pictures for the website should
be around 170x190. To resize the picture, click
Image, and scroll down to Image size.
11
After following step 10, a box such as this will
appear, make sure that both of the boxes shown
above are displayed in pixels, not inches. Do not
click OK yet, continue to step 12.
12
After you are sure both boxes are marked in
pixels, it is time to alter the numbers to the
left. Remember the photo needs to be
160Widthx200Height. If you alter one number, the
other will automatically change to compensate the
other, so that the picture will not look
disfigured. It would be nice if we could just
type in 160 into the width box and 200 in the
height box, but we can not, so we must alter only
one for now. Choose the smaller of the two
numbers to alter, in the above example, it was
the height, so we simply type 200 in the box. If
the width were the smaller number, we would had
typed 160 in the width box. After altering the
number, click OK.
13

Your screen should look something like this now.
14
To enlarge the
picture, simply click, the maximize button as
shown above.
15
Your screen should now look something like this.
To enlarge the picture to a viewable size, simply
click on it and press Control until it is
at 100, or until you are able to see it clearly.
16
Now that the picture is viewable, and the height
is 200 pixels as it is supposed to be, you have
to shave the width down to 160 pixels. However,
before you go any further, you must change some
settings. See the box in the upper right hand
corner. right now it is likely set on Navigator,
simply click on the Info tab to get the box to
appear as the one above.
17
Now that the info screen is up, you must be sure
that it is displaying information in pixels,
rather than inches, so it will be easier for you
to read when you shave the width of the picture
to 160 pixels. To set the information to pixels,
click on the tiny arrow in the upper right hand
corner of the Info box, then scroll down to
palette options. Continue to step 18.
18
After you click Palette options, a screen should
appear such as the one above. Simply convert the
Ruler Units from inches to pixels and click OK.
19
After you have converted the Ruler Units into
pixels, it is time to crop again. This time we
are cropping to shave the sides off, so be sure
not to take any off of the top or bottom. The box
in the bottom right hand corner of the info box
should help(1). When you use the rectangular
marquee tool(2) as we did earlier, it will give
you the measurements of the picture that is
included inside the marquee tool. If you forgot
how to crop, dont worry, the next step will help
remind you.
20
Select the rectangular marquee tool in the upper
left hand of the screen as you did before. Now
use your judgment. we want the picture to be
centered for the website, so be sure to shave off
each side enough to keep the picture centered.
Here, I shaved off some of the right side first.
1 Click the upper corner of the picture and hold
down 2 drag across to the opposite corner, all
the way to the bottom of the picture 3 release
mouse button (be sure that none of the height of
the picture is shaved off) 4 as you drag the
marquee, this box will tell you the dimensions of
the box, remember we always want to keep the side
we already resized the same, in this case the
height, at 200 pixels. As you scroll across, the
width will vary, I brought it in as much as I
could on this picture, and it only shrunk down to
190 pixels wide. Continue to step 21.
21
To shave off the side and leave only what is left
inside the marquee, go to the top, click Image,
and scroll down to Crop. Note the picture is
still 190 pixels wide, to get it down to 160 we
must repeat what we did for the right to the left.
22

The picture should alter as this one did.
23
Select the marquee again and repeat the steps 1
through 3 for the left side, but for step 4, be
sure to read the Info box, be sure to narrow the
picture down to 160 pixels, even if it means
cutting a little out of the picture.
24
After you have the dimensions you want in the
marquee, go back to the top and select Image,
then scroll down to crop.
25

Your picture should now be resized.
26
Now that the picture is resized, you have to save
it. Go to the top and select File, and the Save
for Web. It is highly important that you save the
picture for the web. Continue to step 26.
27
After you save for web, you should get a screen
that looks like the one above. 1. Make sure that
all pictures are saved in either JPEG or GIF
formats. Use JPEG for images that include many
colors, such as the one above, and use GIF for
images that do not include many colors, such as
black and white cartoon photos. 2. With pictures
for the website, be sure the save them at a very
high quality. 3. Click the Save button and
continue to step 28.
28
After you click save this page should appear. 1.
Simply name the file whatever you desire and 2.
Be sure once again you save it in JPEG of GIF
format and then 3. Click Save. You should now be
finished, if you have any questions just contact
me by email. I will be sure to do what I can to
help.
