6Underpinning through research
- Research is crucially important in establishing
the knowledge base and providing concrete
measures by which European environment and health
research results will be fed into policy-making,
for analysing and filling the gaps in European
environment and health activities. (EHAP) - Three themes
- Improving the information chain to understand
the links between sources of pollution and
health effects - Filling the knowledge gap by strengthening
research and addressing the emerging issues on
environment and health - Reviewing policies and improving communication
7Air pollution and health
- Air pollution is the environmental factor
- with the greatest impact on health in Europe
- and is responsible for the largest burden of
- environment-related disease.
- (EEA 2005 Environment and Health)
- Key problem pollutants PM, O3 and NO2
8The project - Basics
- Aim
- To examine and analyse research results from
European and other projects related to air
quality and health to support key European
sustainable development action plans and
strategies - Started February 2007
- Duration 2 years
- Types Specific Support Action (SSA)
- No. of partners 6
9Partners and roles
10Management Structure
11Advisory Group
- Representatives from user community with the
following remit - 1. To provide advice on key research needs
relating to air quality and health strategies,
action plans and policies - 2. To comment and advise on main topics and
questions to be examined by the project partners - 3. To assist in reaching an overall consensus on
the final recommendations arising from the
project for the main stakeholders.
12Objectives
- To support the EHAP in its continuous review
- To identify the remaining knowledge gaps in AQ
H in relation to EU strategies - To identify the technological developments for AQ
assessment or which lead to impact reduction
(ETAP) - To identify the research needs for the urban air
pollution (TSUE) - To identify research needs and knowledge gaps in
relation to the CAFÉ Thematic Strategy on Air
Pollution and its future requirements - To support the EU Commission by providing advice
on relevant 7th Framework Programme calls - To facilitate the interaction, dissemination and
future development of air quality and health
research programmes, clusters and networks

14SCOPE of CAIR4HEALTH
- Focus on the key issue of air quality (indoor and
outdoor) and its impact of human health - Work programme
- Needs of policy makers and other stakeholders
- Review of current research,
- Identify gaps,
- Highlight future areas of research
- Review of air quality research in relation to
health impact and how the assessment and
prediction of this impact can be improved - Air quality-climate interactions will be
considered in relation to health impact - Examine development of integrated assessment
methodologies and impact reduction options - Less emphasis on other aspects eg noise and
chemicals
