Charles Alexander Eastman
Charles A. Eastman was born on February 19, 1858
in Redwood Falls, Minnesota. His parents were
Sioux leader Many Lightnings and Mary Nancy
Eastman.

Ohiyesa
  • Ohiyesa received his Indian name after winning a
    race against other, older boys in his village.
    The name Ohiyesa means The Winner. For
    generations, descendents have been given the name
    of Ohiyesa in honor of him.

Minnesota Uprising
  • During the Minnesota Uprising of 1862, Ohiyesa
    fled with his grandparents and others in the
    tribe to North Dakota and Canada. The winter was
    very harsh and the family nearly starved to
    death. Finally, they returned home and were
    placed on a reservation.

Education
  • Ohiyesas father encouraged him to go to school
    while he was on the reservation. When old
    enough, he went to Dartmouth College where he
    graduated in 1886. He then went to Boston
    University Medical School. He graduated in 1889
    and later became the first doctor to minister to
    the wounded at the Battle of Wounded Knee.

Ohiyesas Many Talents
  • Ohiyesa Eastman was a man of many talents. He
    fought to improve the lives of American Indians
    everywhere. He became a doctor and in 1910 he
    helped to found the Boy Scouts of America.
