Biography
  • Irene Joliot-Curie was born in Paris, France on
    September 12th 1897
  • Was the eldest of two and her parents were Marie
    and Pierre Curie
  • Irene was a very intelligent and bright and
    especially bright in mathematics
  • Married Frederic Joliot on October 29th 1926

Biography Continued...
  • They had two children, Helen and Pierre
  • Because of their overexposure with radiation
    both Irene and her husband got Leukemia and died
    from this illness
  • Irene died in 1956
  • Helen (her daughter) became a nuclear physicist

Schooling
  • Began schooling when she was 6 years old
  • The school closest to their home was not
    considered suitable so she attended one called
    Cassini which was located near the Observatory
  • Because Irene had such a gift for learning, no
    school seemed challenging enough so she and 9
    others began to be home schooled

Schooling Continued
  • To finish her education she attended the College
    of Sevigne and completed secondary school in 1914
  • Went to Sorbonne to study mathematics and physics
  • Completed and obtained both her B.A. and M.A. in
    two years
  • Also helped mother in Radium Institute (this is
    where she began to become interested in
    radioactivity)

Irenes Discoveries and Life Work
  • Discoveries
  • Discovered and demonstrated artificial
    radioactivity
  • Also confirmed discovery of positron
  • Produced a radioactive form of nitrogen
  • Lifes Work
  • From discovery of positron the periodic table was
    transfigured (adding more than 400 radioisotopes)
  • Discovery changed understanding of relationship
    between elements

Honors She Received
  • Irene and Frederic (her husband) were awarded
    the Noble Prize in 1935
  • It was awarded for their production of an
    artificial radioactive element that is naturally
    stable
  • She was a member of the French Atomic Energy
    Commission, director of the Institute of Radium,
    and she became the legion of Honor in 1939
  • There partners had also been awarded Noble
    Prizes
  • James Chadwick- 1932
  • C.D. Anderson - 1936
