Introduction
Objectives

• It took me months to decide where to study. I
  made a list of things that were important to me.
• This is the list I created
• Location- I wanted to be in Western Europe.
  Belgium is right in the middle
• Language- I did not want to study in an English
  speaking country, but I wanted the instruction to
  be in English. Without an exception, every
  Beglian I met spoke English.
• Travel- I wanted an abroad environment conducive
  to travel. This included location, time off of
  school/permitting schedule and accessibility to
  transportation. Belgium fit all of these
  criteria.
• Academics- I wanted to be at a known University
  with academics equivalent or better that
  University of Illinois. As one of the oldest
  colleges in Europe, Katholieke Universiteit is
  known for their high standards of academics.
• Culture- I wanted to go to a country that had a
  culture much different from my own. Also it was
  important to be around people other than
  Americans. In the international house I lived
  in, there were people from eight different
  countries, allowing for plenty of cross-cultural
  interaction.

I studied abroad at the Katholieke Universiteit
located in Leuven, Belgium. The English
instruction taught at the best University in the
country offered a perfect opportunity for a
unique cultural experience in the heart of
Europe. The location is only a few hours from
Paris, Luxembourg, Amsterdam and Cologne.

restaurants that spill into the street when the
weather is nice.

Materials and Methods
The Leuven train station is only a 20 minute ride
to downtown Brussels!
Before going abroad I bought a DK book on
Europe. I knew I would be doing plenty of
traveling, so a broad book worked the best for
me. I did not get a book specifically on
Belgium, because as I predicted informational
material was given to us on arrival. I e-mailed
any questions I had to the abroad office in
Belgium, and they were quick to respond and
help. I arranged my own flight. This was fairly
simple and a volunteer from the university met me
at the airport when I arrived.

Leuven was the perfect opportunity to travel and
travel. I set foot on 10 different countries
while in Europe. I learned how to adapt to
another culture and sampled plenty of the Belgian
beer and chocolate. The country has a unique and
important history many people are not aware of. I
would recommend this program to someone looking
for a different experience in Europe. Not many
people travel to Belgium when in Europe. This is
why it is the perfect place to study. I was the
first American many of the Belgians had ever met,
which allowed for rich and meaningful
interactions. The program was well organized,
with very few shortcomings in my mind.
