Variables
  • Controlled variables These are the things that
    are kept the same throughout your experiments.
  • Independent variable The one variable that you
    purposely change and test.
  • Dependent variable The measure of change
    observed because of the independent variable. It
    is important to decide how you are going to
    measure the change.

Hypothesis
  • Based on the research you have done, you will be
    writing an answer or a possible solution your
    best educated guess to your question.
  • It should be stated as fact.
  • NEVER start your hypothesis with the words I
    think
  • Make sure you write down your hypothesis before
    you begin your experiment.

Materials
  • Type a detailed list of the items you needed to
    complete your experiments.
  • Be specific about the amounts used.

Procedure
  • List all of the steps used in completing your
    experiment.
  • Remember to number your steps.
  • The first step is NOT Gather materials since
    that is what your materials list indicates.
  • Add photos of your experiments. These can be
    taken during testing or be pictures of the
    equipment set-up before and after experimentation.

Data/Observations
  • It is easier to understand the data if it is put
    into a table first. Make sure all data is clearly
    labeled.
  • Independent variable is listed in the left
    column, dependent variable in columns to the
    right
  • Quantitative data should include units of
    measure.Significant figures should indicate how
    precisely you can measure. e.g. 13.0 cm vs. 13 cm
  • Qualitative data should be described clearly and
    factually.Some qualitative data can be given
    rankings to aid in recording data. e.g. shades
    of green ranked from darkest (5) to palest (1)

Analysis
  • Then create a graph in Microsoft Excel and import
    it here.If you have a large quantity of data,
    only the summary graphs need to be placed on the
    backboard. Other graphs can be placed in a folder
    in front of your project.
  • Make sure all data is clearly labeledTitle
    Describe the independent dependent variable
    analyzedLabels for X axis and Y axis with units
    includedNumber scales appropriate to show
    trends in the dataLegend describes the
    characteristic being measure, NOT Group 1,
    Group 2
  • Descriptive analysis includes possible sources of
    error. This is an explanation of variables that
    could not be controlled, or unexpected
    circumstances. This is NOT an excuse for bad lab
    technique.

Conclusion
  • Type a brief summary of what you discovered based
    on the results of your experiments. You need to
    indicate whether or not the data supports the
    hypothesis and explain why or why not.
