Title: How MPLS QoS Works

1
How MPLS QoS Works
2
Traffic Flow- Customer CPE
  • Customer CPE
  • Customer CPE -identifies and tags each of the 6
types of the traffic with TOS
  • Customer CPE WAN Port CPE places traffic into
configured output queues based on identifiers
    sent toward PR

Packet flow
3
Traffic Flow- Ingress
  • PR Ingress
  • Traffic arrives at the PR which checks for
identifiers and if it matches, it sends to the
    associated policer
  • if it exceeds the policer, an action is taken
(for Premium and Premium Plus it is dropped)
  • if it does not exceed the policer, it is counted,
the loss-priority is set, the forwarding class is
    set
  • The core configuration then looks at the
loss-priority and forwarding class that has been
set, and sets the EXP to one of 6 values

GC IPVPN

Traffic Flow
  • IP VPN Network Backbone
  • Differentiated traffic is sent through the IP
    VPN network cloud

5
Destination PR- Egress
  • Destination PR- Egress
  • Based on the EXP bit setting and loss priority
bit, the traffic will be queued on egress for all
    6 CoS
  • Traffic is taken from the queues and placed on
    the outbound interface

Flexible - IP VPN Billing Models
  • All billing models have the following
  • Ability to tier bandwidth the overall amount of
    traffic (except for load balancing)
  • Policing for the Premium, Premium Plus, GC VOIP
    and GC Video traffic.
  • A port charge will be billed for every billing
    model
  • All billing will be aggregated for each overall
Class of Service (Enhanced/Enhanced Plus will be
added together, Basic/Basic Plus will be added
together, and Premium/Premium Plus will be added
    together.)
  • Each overall Class of Service will have one
billing rate (Enhanced/Enhanced Plus will be one
rate, Basic/Basic Plus will be one rate, and
Premium/Premium Plus will be one rate)
  • All default traffic/untagged traffic will
selected by the customer to be Basic, Basic Plus,
    Enhanced or Enhanced Plus
  • Billing models will only be applicable to on-net
    sites.

7
Real Time Class of Service Considerations
  • Real time traffic is separated into three
    different products
  • Global Crossing VOIP (Premium Plus)
  • Global Crossing VIDEO (Premium Plus)
  • DATA Premium and Premium Plus
  • Each real time type of traffic
  • Is identified separately
  • Is policed separately (Bandwidth does NOT
    overlap)
  • Combined real-time traffic never exceeds port
    speed
  • Always is prioritized over Enhanced /Enhanced
Plus or Basic /Basic Plus Traffic
