Title: Young Children Emerge

1
Young Children Emerge
  • Into Writing
  • By, Jeremiah Mills

2
  • Many young children become writers before they
    get to kindergarten.
  • They may not be able to create words, sentences,
or paragraphs but they can tell you stories that
    they have made up.
  • The rest of the children will be introduced to
the idea of writing in the first year of school.

3
  • The development of a young childs writing is
very similar to that of their reading.

4
Three Stages
  • 1st - The children make scribbles that represent
    their writing.
  • 2nd - Their scribbles become more like words and
    they get into invented spelling.
  • 3rd - This is when they become fluent writers.
Their words are spelled correctly and are in
    proper order.

5
  • Many teachers try to keep the children from using
invented spelling, but that does not help the
children. Allow them to explore and with your
guidance they will discover the correct way to
    spell.

6
  • Young children also like to do the same things as
the older children. They like to label their
pictures with words and letters, describing what
    they have drawn.

7
Introducing young children to writing.
  • Children are introduced to writing from their
parent and teachers as they write.
  • Teachers should teach minilessons on writing and
get the kids involves in writing activities.

8
  • Teachers also demonstrate writing through morning
    messages, language exercises, and other
    activities that incorporate writing.
  • These can be anything from scribbles and random
marks to words and cursive writing depending on
    their ability.

9
Stages of development
  • Scribble writing -
  • One letter labeling -
  • Invented spelling -
  • More sophisticated invented spelling with spacing-

10
  • Invented spelling with application of rules -

11
  • Kid spelling teaches the students many strategies
for writing, and gives them permission to invent
    spelling that reflects their level.
  • Young childrens writing grows out of talking and
    drawing.
  • Kids writing is usually how they talk but written
    on the paper.

12
Adapting the writing process for young children.
  • Teachers many time simplify the writing process
for young children by abbreviating the revising
and editing stages of the writing process.

13
Writing centers
  • Writing centers can be setup in a kindergarten.
It is a special place where children can write.
  • It should be located at a table with chairs and
    have plenty of supplies.
  • Supplies should include pencils, crayons, a date
stamp, different kinds of paper, journal
notebooks, envelopes, and anything else you may
    want to keep there.

14
Authors chair
  • This is a chair that is set apart from all the
    rest.
  • Only people who are reading aloud sit in the
    chair.
  • Children should be thinking of three things when
the teacher is reading a book in the chair.

15
  • Authors write books.
  • I am an author.
  • If I wrote this published book now, I wouldnt
    write it this way.
