What is a francophone?
  • A francophone refers to a nation, group, or
    places where French is spoken, primarily as the
    primary language

Where can one find francophones?
  • Francophones can be found on every continent,
    except for Australia.
  • All over the world, there are over 30 countries
    in which French is either the primary language,
    or in which some French is spoken.

North America (L Amérique du Nord)
  • In North America, about 1/3 of the population of
    Canada (Le Canada) speaks French. The French
    speakers primarily live in the province of Quebec
    (Le Quebec).
  • Creole, a dialect of French, is also spoken in
    Louisiana (La Louisiane). Louisiana is located in
    the United States.

Central America (L Amérique Centrale)
  • Two Caribbean islands Martinique (la Martinique)
    and Guadeloupe (La Guadeloupe) are part of
    France. Their inhabitants are considered French
    citizens.
  • Some French is also spoken on the island of Haiti
    (LHa?ti).

South America (L Amérique du Sud)
  • In South America, French is spoken in French
    Guiana (La Guyane Française) which is located on
    the northeastern coast of South America.

Europe (L Europe)
  • Besides France (La France), French is also spoken
    in parts of Belgium (La Belgique), Luxembourg (Le
    Luxembourg), and Switzerland (La Suisse).

Asia (L Asie)
  • Although the presence of French has not always
    been significant in Asia, its importance is
    growing rapidly.
  • Currently French is spoken in Laos (Le Laos),
    Cambodia (Le Cambodge), and Vietnam (Le Vietnam).

Africa (L Afrique)
  • French is spoken on the large island of
    Madagascar (Madagascar).
  • In North Africa, French is understood and spoken
    by many people of Algeria (L Algérie), Morocco
    (Le Maroc), and Tunisia (La Tunisie). Many of
    inhabitants in these countries have also left
    Africa to go to France. In France, they have
    gained French citizenship.

  • In Western and Central Africa, about twenty
    African countries have adopted French as their
    official language.

Project Specifications
  • You will be able to choose one of the 30
    Francophone countries. Students names will be
    placed into a bowl and pulled one by one. Once
    your name is chosen, you will select the country
    of your choice until all names or all countries
    are chosen. In case there are more students then
    countries, I will allow duplicates.

  • Countries from which you may choose

Project Specifications
  • Once a country is chosen, you will have to
    complete a project consisting of a paper, and an
    artistic representation. Students will also need
    to present their project briefly in front of the
    class. I will not time your presentations. You
    will receive credit as long as you present.

Paper portion
  • For the paper portion of the project, students
    should write a one page description of their
    country. They may include such topics as the
    history of the country, the capital, imports,
    exports, weather, demographics (population and
    ethnic breakdown) and location.
  • Students must also include one current news item
    about their country.

Creative Piece of Project
  • Students may choose to portray their country in
    any way that this wish. Some illustration of
    their flag should be included.
  • Options include
  • Posters
  • Power Point
  • Brochures
  • Models
  • Cakes
  • Maps
  • Please see me if you have other ideas.

Grading
  • The written portion of the project will be worth
    40 points.
  • The creative piece will be worth 50 points.
  • The in-class presentation will be worth 10
    points.
  • The total point value of the project will be
    worth 100 points.

Project Due Dates
  • For 2G, the project will be due on Monday,
    October 5th.
  • For 7B, the project will be due on Tuesday,
    October 6th.
  • For every day that the project is late, 5 points
    will be deducted.
  • We will spend one day in the library. There will
    be no other class time devoted to the project.

  • If you have any questions or concerns, please

    www.schoolrack.com/Fallonl so that you may access
    the project requirements at any time.
