Use of a Safe Ride Public Transportation System.

Purpose
  • To assess knowledge concerning current DUI laws
    in Illinois.
  • To determine current drinking and driving
    behavior of individuals 21 and older.
  • To determine attitudes concerning current DUI
    enforcement tactics.
  • To determine attitudes concerning the use of a
    public sponsored safe ride program.

Methods
  • A self reporting survey was administered to 50
    individuals 21 years and older. Participation was
    voluntary.
  • The study was administered during a three day
    period at 3 of the most frequented bars within
    town X.
  • Individuals were asked to participate in the
    study before placing their orders with bar staff.

Methods / Data Analysis
  • The completed questionnaires were numerically
    coded and frequency analysis was conducted using
    SPSS. Mean /- SD was calculated for Sex, Race,
    and Age.

Results(Behaviors)
  • 90 of the participants drink alcohol.
  • 50 of participants drink at least 3 days a week.
  • 80 of participants reported they are more likely
    to drink at a bar,
  • 42 or respondents say they drink an average of 3
    drinks per hour.
  • 64 of the participants say they usually drive
    home after drinking.
  • 36 of the participants have to drive an average
    of 2-4 miles in order to get home after drinking.
    24 drive an average of 5-7 miles in order to get
    home after drinking.

  • KR-20 4.10 not correct
  • Group Mean 4.66
  • Standard Deviation .96
  • 66 of respondents knew the definition of DUI.
  • 100 of respondents knew the correct BAC level.
  • 62 of respondents knew the correct BAC for
    individuals that possess a CDL.
  • 62 of respondents answered question 4 correctly.
  • 76 of respondents answered question 5 correctly.
  • 100 of respondents answered question 6
    correctly.

RESULTS(Attitudes)
  • Cronbach Alpha 0.54
  • 64 of respondents agreed that New DUI
    regulations do not prevent people from drinking
    and driving.
  • 48 of respondents strongly agreed that extra
    police patrols do not prevent Drinking an
    Driving.
  • 56 of respondents agreed that roadside safety
    checks do not prevent drinking and driving.
  • 50 of respondents agreed that there should be
    public transportation throughout the week. 36 of
    respondents disagreed to the notion.

RESULTS(Attitudes)
  • 56 of respondents agreed that there should be
    public transportation available during the
    weekend.
  • 38 of respondents agree that they would use
    public transportation to get home after drinking.
  • 54 of respondents agreed that they would
    consider paying a small fee to help support a
    public transportation system.
  • According to questions 13,14,15 a majority of
    those surveyed do not believe extra laws,
    patrols, and safety checks prevent people from
    drinking and driving.

RESULTS(Attitudes)
  • According to questions 16,17 a majority of
    individuals agree that there should be some form
    of public transportation available during the
    week and weekend between the hours of 10 pm and 4
    am.
  • Questions 18 and 19 showed that a majority of
    those surveyed agreed that they would use public
    transportation if available to get home after
    drinking, and that they would consider paying a
    small fee to help support the system.

Conclusions
  • Individuals are knowledgeable in regards to
    current Illinois DUI laws and regulation.
  • Individuals use the bar as a social outlet
    resulting in increased days drinking and drinks
    consumed in a one hour period.
  • Individuals are going to continue to drive
    themselves home after drinking regardless of DUI
    regulations and enforcement tactics.
  • If given an option individuals will use the Safe
    Ride public transportation program to get home
    after drinking.

Recommendations
  • Give individuals available options to get home
    besides driving themselves.
  • Implement a DUI education program that advocates
    for the use of designated driver or safe ride
    program.
  • Support a Safe Ride program by using DUI revenue
    such as fines, IDOT grants, and public
    sponsorship to incorporate a Safe Ride program
    into the community.
  • Use pre-existing services and equipment to help
    facilitate a Safe Ride program.
