  • Generally,
  • Show up couple of minutes early
  • Listen
  • Ask Questions
  • Determine
  • Is this of interest to me?
  • Could this help me?
  • What opportunities exist?

28
Your Job Bad News (maybe)
  • You will be a presenter.
  • Sign-up early.
  • You decide (mostly) about what you discuss.
  • Current Work
  • Papers Read
  • Past Work
  • Potentially Useful
  • Etc.

29
Presentation Tips
30
Agenda
  • Illusion/Acting
  • Preparation
  • Stylistic (how slides should appear)
  • Mannerisms (how you should appear)

31
Illusion/Acting
  • Similar to good acting
  • Looks Easy
  • Result of
  • Preparation
  • Practice

32
Illusion, cont.
  • Last Minute Presentation Preparation
  • Three Possible Cases
  • Have a (similar) presentation already done.
  • Providing superficial coverage.
  • Are deluded.

33
Preparation
34
5 Questions.
  • Who is the audience?
  • What is the goal?
  • Why am I speaking?
  • Where is it being held?
  • When is it?

35
Content
  • Have a Plan.
  • Keep it Simple.
  • Why are you telling us this?

36
How many slides?
  • You will likely have to answer questions.
  • No Overtime.
  • Heuristic
  • Estimate 1 slide per minute.

37
Stylistic
38
Stylistic
  • What is nice on a Monitor may not be on a
    Projector.
  • Colors
  • Effects
  • Height/Width

39
Stylistic
  • Generally, having a lot of text is a very bad
idea because the audience will either spend the
time reading (and not listening to you) or they
will not bother reading, in which case you have
wasted you time writing the information.
  • What about Proofs/Theorems?

40
Stylistic
  • Use bullets
  • Use images.

41
Example Table
42
(No Transcript)
43
Example 2
  • Trying to explain impact of most and least
    significant bits in an image.

44
Example 2 - Image Bit Planes
Bit plane 7 (most significant bit)
Bit plane 6
45

Bit plane 3
Bit plane 2
47
Example 2 - Image Bit Planes
Bit plane 1
Bit plane 0 (least significant bit)
48
Stylistic
  • Small font size BAD!
  • Note Small for presentations is still larger
    than that for papers.
  • This is likely the smallest you want (20 pt)
Even then, maybe two slides would be better.
  • This is a 14 pt font. Is this something you want
your audience to try to read
  • This is 10 pt font.

49
Stylistic
  • Keep Presentation Clean
  • Avoid Special Effects
  • Only use when enhances point.

50
Mannerisms
51
Mannerisms
  • Look at Audience
  • Eye-contact
  • 3 second rule.
  • Do not turn your back.
  • Do not look down.

52
Mannerisms
  • Speaking
  • Must project voice (not yell).
  • Speed control.
  • Must have conviction.
  • If you make a mistake
  • Correct it
  • Move on
  • Dont apologize.

53

54
