color maps with some photographs of artifacts.
Many good color maps. Includes U.S. Presidential
elections up to 2000, with electoral votes and
states won by individual candidates.
An old standard. Mainly arranged
chronologically, has an alphabetical Checklist
of Flags. Includes uncommon flags, and the flag
code for care and display of the flag.
6
Chronological arrangement from prehistory to the
Middle Ages, many good color illustrations.
Attractive mix of color photographs and maps,
divided by continent after prehistoric section.
Glossary.
Thorough and detailed, comprehensive index in
third volume. Bibliographies for each article.
List of kings and dynasties are inside the back
cover. Not flashy, but very functional.
7
Multi-volume, alphabetically arranged. Timelines
and sidebars are interspersed throughout,
including definitions of terms (a convenient
feature).
A timeline, which includes detailed statistical
tables, maps of war fronts (and African
colonies), an extensive glossary, a whos who,
and a chronological summary of the post-war peace
process up to 1921.
Most of the text is a chronological narrative
history section, followed by an alphabetical
dictionary. Some special features include
imperial maps, genealogies of rulers from the
Saxons to the Windsors, sovereigns from 899 up,
and Prime Ministers from 1721 to Tony Blair.
8
Divided into three parts 1) geography of the
continent, 2) cultural background of tribes, and
3) regional articles about countries. Integrated
sidebar articles included, and a gazetteer with
latitude and longitude of places. Table of
Contents shows a special feature area. Many
color photographs and maps.
Alphabetical arrangement by name of battle, with
five appendices1) alphabetical list of battles,
2) chronological list of battles, 3) list of
battles by war, 4) battlefield sites listed
alphabetically, and 5) battlefield sites by
region. Cross-referenced, and entries have
suggestions for further reading. Few
illustrations (some maps), but very informative.
Arranged by calendar dates, filed chronologically
by year under each date. Three appendices 1)
tribal names with meaning of the names, 2)
alternative tribal names, and 3) Native American
calendars by select tribes, including names for
the moon. Following this are select season names
and days of the week for a few tribes.
9
Thematic arrangement with a good variety of
topics. Seven appendices, including chronology,
tribes with language and location, reservations,
Canadian tribes, major Native American place
names, museums, and glossary.
Designed for students. Basically alphabetical
arrangement with sidebars. Key definitions are
displayed in margins. Multi-volume, some color
plates and black and white illustrations.
Thematic arrangement with MANY statistical
tables, with a list of the tables as an appendix.
Black and white portraits included. Great for
statistics.
10
Multi-volume, alphabetical arrangement. Volume 9
notable for maps and primary source documents
from colonial times to President G.W. Bushs
address to Congress after 9/11.
A standard source. Chronological arrangement,
with each set of facing pages subdivided into 4
categories I. Exploration, wars, government,
civil rights, statistics. II. Humanities. III.
Business, science, education, philosophy,
religion. IV. Sports, social issues, crime,
folkways, fashion, holidays. Index for specific
topics.
Thematic arrangement, subdivided chronologically
under topic. Color photographs and maps.
11
Multi-volume, alphabetical arrangement. Vol.10
has a timeline and list of research centers and
libraries by state, extensive bibliography, list
of relevant websites, and people by profession.
Thematic arrangement. Appendix is a substantial
list of tables. Primarily a statistical source,
which has very good coverage of the time period.
Part of a series, with several others noted below.
Mostly alphabetical encyclopedic format,
cross-referenced signed articles with further
reading lists per article. Lengthy articles,
from several pages to many at least a column.
Brief glossary, with a chronology of the war over
30 pages. Also has a document list, along with
several hundred pages of documents. Appendices
include Union and Confederate officers and
governments, battlefield site and location maps.
12
Part of series covering different time periods.
Thematic arrangement, primarily a statistical
source with many tables. Good thorough
information for this time period, great for
social life and customs reports.
Part of same series listed above, same
arrangement. Does not cover the World Wars as
much as it covers society and home life during
this period. Good for home front information.
Each volume covers one 20th century decade, with
topical arrangement by chapters. Some include
chronologies, events, individuals, publications
and obituaries within that chapter. Good for
browsing, and indexed by volume for quick look-up.
13
Chronological arrangement by year. Each year
includes brief statistics, deaths, events and
popular culture by category. Indexed three ways
name, title, and general information. Great
for birth year reports.
Good for local history of prominent families
active in Seminole County history. Filed
alphabetically by surname the table of contents
serves as the index. Important for information
not published elsewhere, and very useful for
local history reports.
