Abstract Electronic communication has been
changing its behavior within companies,
associations and communities. Strong
communication is necessary to have good human
relations between people from different
countries. The Internet is a useful and important
communication medium, as is new technology for
virtual net communities. They both require good
human relations and enhanced cultural awareness.

The Internet has created a new environment for
global communication. The communications I
initiated in Japan using e-mail addresses I
collected from business cards and other sources
was part of a research project about the
psychology of Internet usage and its relation to
memory and emotion. In this study, I discovered
that people tend to experience the Internet in a
highly unique and personal way. I also found
that a number of people used e-mail to resume
communications with old friends with whom they
had lost contact.

6content business vs. volunteer
- The content business is a field highly valued by
man who likes culture. By examining online
community activities, I have discovered that many
groups use mailing lists to dispatch online
information to one point at a local area. Even
when government offices and universities are
involved in these communication activities,
profit is not the highest priority. In Iwate and
Gifu prefectures, mailing lists play important
roles in supporting businesses. As the
digitalization of cultural properties (such as
historical records) in these areas promoted
contents business, supply- and demand- market
trends did not develop since the content has an
established market as educational material.

8local activities
- Consequently, I focused on the importance of
local activities and confirmed that the success
of Internet communities strongly depends on the
role of leaders who guide the members.
Professors in university, for example, can
utilize their teaching skills to guide network
building and content production. Network
building thus requires basic operation skills and
knowledge of communication technology, but to
renew the quality of content, technical knowledge
must be improved.

9historical and cultural issues
- In that sense, at the community-level mailing
lists have provided good solutions, enabling
leaders with excellent skills to give members
opportunities to promote improvement via e-mail
or at regular meetings, thus facilitating
improvement in the quality of home pages. In
short, new communities have grown out of shared
interests in historical and cultural issues, even
fostering the phenomenon in which heroes from
ancient tales are brought back to life as
animated characters.
