How might the ApGrid contribute to Science and
Technology in the Asia Pacific region?

What is ApGrid?
  • Asia Pacific Grid (ApGrid) is a Grid testbed on
the Asia Pacific region which aims to create Asia
    Pacific partnership for Grid computing.
  • The objectives of the ApGrid are to
  • Build an international Grid testbed to explore
issues related to Grid technology and
    application.
  • Act as an interface to global grid effort such as
    GGF.
  • Share resources, knowledge, and technologies.
  • Collaborate and build upon each others work.
  • Encourage application communities and assist in
using our technologies along with others.
  • Build, nurture, and promote ApGrid technologies
    and applications.
  • Provide a venue for sharing and exchanging
information/ideas and help initiate new projects.

Grid Testbed
  • Hardware
  • Make existing platforms accessible to the
    regional community
  • Coordinate approaches to deploying
    network-enabled, data-intensive Grid compute
    resources
  • Software
  • Middleware adoption of current technologies and
    coordinated development and improvement
  • Distributed data management environments
deployment of software layers to allow
    researchers to share data collections
  • Portals providing interfaces to allow greater
number of people to interact with the resources
  • Operations
  • Grid Operations Centers (GOCs)
  • User services and support
  • Policies relating to sharing of resources

5
Grid Ops is more than technology
  • We need to establish working environments that
    allow network engineers, system administrators,
    user services personnel, application developers
and end users to proactively monitor, manage,
access and understand resources that span many
    sites.
  • This may require use of commercial solutions,
development of new tools, training of staff,
    interaction with third-party application
developers, and outreaching to user communities.
  • This may require the support of our funding
agencies and institutions to encourage exchange
    of resources

6
Grid Operations Working Group
  • Several Grid projects are beginning to address
the complex issues of Grid Operations and are
preparing to establish a working group.
  • This may be a good opportunity for ApGrid sites
to participate as we work to understand the
issues and solutions toward making the Grid a
    valuable shared resource.
