Title: Stemchanging verbs

1
Stem-changing verbs
  • those tricky little boot verbs

2
So, whats a stem-changing verb?
  • A stem-changing verb is a type of verb that
changes its stem, along with its ending whenever
    it is conjugated.
  • (Hence the name stem-changing verb)

3
Do I have to learn a whole new conjugation
pattern?
  • Well, Yes and No. See, when conjugating a stem
changing verb, the endings that you learned for
regular present tense -ar, -er, and -ir verbs
    still apply.
  • BUT
  • You now have second pattern to learnand that is
the pattern of how when the stem changes.

4
Lets take the verb jugar
  • Jugar is a stem-changing verb.
  • Notice that when I conjugate jugar for first
person singular yo, I get juego.
  • Just like any other regular present tense -ar
verb conjugated for yo. Juego ends in -o.
  • But, notice what happened to the stem?

5
What happened?
  • When jugar was conjugated the u changed into a
    ue.
  • Interestingthe stemchanged.
  • J u g J u e g

6
So, why is it called a boot verb?
  • Imagine a conjugation chart for the stem changing
    verb Jugar. Notice Anything?

Every conjugation inside the boot shape has a
stem change, those outside the boot shape simply
follow the normal conjugation pattern.
7
Hmmm.
  • Q So does that mean that all stem changes are
    from u ? ue?
  • A Forget about it! There are different types
    of stem-changes that occur.
  • Pedir e ? i Servir e ? i
  • Tener e ? ie Doler o ? ue
  • Venir e ? ie Poder o ? ue
  • Preferir e ? ie Dormir o ? ue

Do you notice any patterns?
