Title: The Interaction Between LongTerm Memory and ShortTerm Memory

1
The Interaction Between Long-Term Memory and
Short-Term Memory
  • Dr. Ayanna Thomas
  • PS111 March 14, 2007

2
What is the Duration of STM?
3
The Modal Modal
4
Evidence for the Distinction between STM and LTM
The serial-position curve of memory
5
Effects of Delay Glanzer Cunitz (1966)
6
Further Evidence for 2 Stores
  • Patient HM (Milner, 1966)
  • Amnesiac after removal of temporal lobes. Cannot
recall and recognize things after a delay, but
    STM is fine.
  • Patient KF (Warrington Shallice, 1969)
  • Motorbike accident leading to left
    parieto-oiccipital damage. Good recall of
stories, long word lists, etc, but 2 digit span
    only.

7
Distinction through Double Dissociation
  • Different deficits of these patients suggest that
different areas of brain damage effect different
aspects of memory. This is called a double
    dissociation.

8
More Than Rehearsal
  • What is going on in STM according to Modal Model?
  • STM is not really as passive as was originally
    conceived
  • Re-conceptualization of STM into Working Memory

9
From STM To Working Memory
  • Short-term memories are active contents of the
    mind
  • Typically conceived as the by-products or end
    results of a perceptual analysis
  • Working memory is a more inclusive term
  • internal machinery that collectively selects
    short-term memories
  • maintains memory in an active state
  • underlies most on-line psychological functioning

10
Working Memory Model (Baddley Hitch, 1974)
  • Active rather than passive
  • PL stores and rehearses verbal/auditory
    information
  • VSSP stores and rehearses visual and spatial
    information
  • CE controls and coordinates these slave systems
  • The way in which information is handled in WM can
influence the likelihood that it will pass into
    LTM
