Title: Sink or Float Lab

1
Sink or Float Lab
Density how to figure it all out!
2
Relationships
  • Mass is Higher
  • Volume is Lower
  • Mass is Lower
  • Volume is Higher

3
Why does a log float while a pebble sinks?
4
Definition of Density
  • A ratio that compares an objects mass to its
    volume

5
We can calculate density using the formula
  • Density Mass ? Volume

Density Mass Volume
Units g/ml or g/cm³
6
Density of Water
  • 1g/cm3
  • IF the density of object is greater than 1 g/ cm3
    it will SINK!
  • Density gt 1g/ml SINK
  • IF the density of the object is less than 1 g/
    cm3 it will FLOAT!
  • Density lt 1g/ml FLOAT

  • Take a look at the two boxes below.
  • Each box has the same volume.
  • If each ball has the same volume, which box would
    have more MASS? Why?

1
2
The box that has more balls has more mass per
unit of volume. Since mass is usually expressed
in grams and volume in cubic centimeters, density
is expressed in grams/cubic centimeter.
8
Block I Mass 79 grams Volume 29 cubic cm.
79 grams
Density
29 cm3
Density 2.72 g/cm3
9
Block 2Mass 25 grams Volume 29 cubic cm.
25 grams
Density
29 cm3
Density 0.86 g/cm3
10
What is each block made of?
Using the table, on the next slide, it is now
possible for you to determine what substance
makes up each block.
