Background
  • In the UK, it is estimated that 42 of children
    are exposed to second hand smoke every day. This
    figure rises to 60 in areas of social
    deprivation.
  • Everyday in the UK, 50 children are taken to
    hospital everyday due to exposure the second hand
    smoke.
  • 3500 deaths of adults each year are blamed on
    exposure to second hand smoke.

What is second hand smoke?
  • Second hand smoke is a mixture of
  • Side stream smoke that flows directly from the
    burning end of a cigarette
  • Mainstream smoke that smokers inhale then
    exhale
  • More than 85 of a burning cigarette goes into
    the room atmosphere where it takes up to 3 hours
    to disperse

Health Risks
  • Asthma and bronchitis
  • Admission to hospital
  • Cot death
  • Coughs, colds and chest infections
  • Ear infections
  • Meningitis
  • Cancer
  • Heart disease
  • Behaviour and learning difficulties
  • Time off school can effect education
  • 3 times more likely to start smoking themselves

Why dangerous to children?
  • Their bodies are still growing
  • Their lungs are very sensitive to harmful
    chemicals
  • They have smaller lungs so they breathe faster
  • They breathe in the 4000 chemicals in the
    cigarette too!

What is smoke free homes?
  • Its a promise system where people make a pledge
    to take steps to protect other people who live in
    their home from the effects of second hand smoke
  • The homes is the most common place for second
    hand smoke exposure. An estimated 90

What is the aim of Smoke Free Homes?
  • When you smoke at home everyone under your roof
    is exposed to harmful second hand tobacco smoke
  • The aim of Salford Smoke Free Homes is to reduce
    the harmful effects of second hand smoke in the
    home
  • The secondary aim of the scheme is to encourage
    smokers to think about cutting down and quitting

Goals Smoke Free Home Promises
  • Gold make your home totally smoke free at all
    times
  • Silver never smoke in the presence of children
    and smoke only in one well ventilated room
  • Bronze never smoke in the presence of children
    and other non-smokers within the house

The Scheme to date (December 2006 February
2008)
  • Total number of promises 2982
  • Gold 2279 (76)
  • Silver 550 (19)
  • Bronze 153 (5)
  • Total number of children involved 4052
  • Homes involved who have a smoker 1382 (46)

Why it works.
  • It works because its an appealing guilt-free,
    non confrontational scheme with low potential for
    negative reaction
  • Its not about telling people to stop smoking
    its about where people smoke!
  • Its for anyone who has children in their home
    e.g parents, grandparents, smokers and non-smokers

The Benefits
  • Improved health of children and adults
  • The house will smell fresher and cleaner
  • Food will taste better
  • Less frequent cleaning/redecoration
  • Pets will be healthier
  • Decreased risk of house fire
  • First step towards a possible quit attempt

Delivery
  • Local Smoke Free Advisors, employed through
    Community Health Action Partnership, community
    based in the 10 wards in Salford with the highest
    smoking prevalence rates.
  • Salford Primary Care Trust and City Council
    commissioned the social enterprise to deliver the
    service.
  • Visiting community groups, mother and toddler
    groups to do small presentations and raise
    awareness whilst signing people up.
  • All local people.

Training
  • Training will also be provided for key partners
    anyone who has contact with people in their
    homes.
  • These include, the fire service, midwives,
    health visitors, housing staff, Sure Start staff
    and many more!
  • Tackling the issue from different angles makes
    sure we get coverage of all the varied
    communities of Salford

Key Outcomes
  • Set target rates achieved and trebled in first
    year
  • Local people rolled out the scheme with a focus
    on the most deprived areas this was recognised
    as best practice
  • Partnership working between key staff in City
    Council, PCT and Fire Service

Next steps.
  • Increase scope of work, building capacity of
    current advisers, targeting more areas
    fostering services, adoption services, childrens
    centres
  • Recruitment of more advisers if necessary
  • Completion and distribution of evaluation and
    implementation of any recommendations
  • Target for next year is 2000 promises, and 50 of
    these homes should have a resident smoker
  • Smoke free cars..

    Smoke Free Homes Scheme
  • I have learnt of the disadvantages of smoking.I
    have also learnt about the benefits I have
    promised to my child and myself
